Now that the PPE is on the road, it needs some upgrades

Post by dablack00 »

So I finally got the Purple People Eater (PPE) on the road a couple of months ago. (I didn't come up with the name, all my friends call it that and it has stuck) (Also no one actually says Purple People Eater, they all just say "The PPE")

I've been putting a couple of miles on the new 460/C6 combo. It gets a little hot when idling for too long so I'm putting on a electric taurus fan. They have a great fan to try and keep the 3.8 from blowing gaskets. I've already got a 200 amp alt to run it so I'm all set. I also need to finish putting in a biger trans cooler and bolt down the buckets seats. When you put in buckets seats, the outer holes are there, but the inner ones need to be drilled. I also need to hook up the headlights so I can driver past dark. Once I get the fan/ headlights/ trans cooler hooked up then I can finish tuning the carb and drive it everyday.

I will get some pics of the fan install when I do it this next week.

PPE also stands for "Personal Protective Equipment." Maybe someone is trying to tell you something!!

Yeah, I used to work at a mobile oil refinery. I know all about PPE.

Here are a couple of shots of the truck.

I gotta say, if it's overheating at idle, I think there is something else wrong than the fan. The electric is probably not a bad idea, but I doubt it's the source of the problem. Did you replace the radiator when doing the motor? Is it sized for the current powerplant?

Thanks for the tips, but when it overheats at idle, then it is a air flow problem, not a water flow problem. On the highway, doing 3000 rpms (much higher heat output from the motor) it is nice and cool so the radiator is sized correctly.

I pulled the mechanical fan last night. The taurus fan looks like it is going to cover about 65% of the radiators surface. I need a plug from the pick-n-pull so it is going to be the weekend before I can finish this little project. I will show what controller and relays I use, where I got them and their part numbers so someone can duplicate my efforts is they want.

Someone did their MSDS homework.

I think your right. The mechanical fan isn't moving enough air. The electric fans make the engine compartment look better, IMO. Great job on the truck! Must be a monster with that 460! The seats look great too!

P.S. You know you can't paint "PPE" a different color now, right?

I know. All my friends say I need to keep it purple, but I just can't do it. I'm not going to spend the time and money to paint it and it still be purple. I'm converting it to an XLT with the woodgrain and I want it black. In front of my friends I will refer to the truck as the XLT, but they still ask what going on with the PPE. They can call it PPE, they can call it XLT, but they can't call it slow!

Black will look great too!

It sounds like it will always be "PPE" though!
