New project for the 68

Post by 1968flareside »

I plan on starting the mustang tank project in the 68 very soon after getting settled at the new house. A friend and I have been talking about this for some time now. It seems the rear frame dimensions on his 56 and the 68 are very similar and we will be consulting each other throught this. I plan on using the late 60's 19 gallon tank for the job. It appears to be a fairly simple project according to the articles I have read, like this one....

I will, of course, take any help I can get on the project.

Keith, I will do that! Mommy-in-Law is sending me a digital camera for my birthday. So I will use that when I get started.

Another question....

As of right now, I have about $500 to play with. I figure the gas tank project will be around $200 for materials. My problem is little bits of money here and there and so many parts to buy. I also lack a lot of tools to do much of the work that I know how to. I don't have a welder, air compressor or any air tools. I just don't know what is the best plan of attack. Should I skip the tank project for now and save the 500 towards these tools? The closest friend with a welder is in Phoenix, almost 2 hour drive away. I know if I had the tools available I could get more done. Then again, if I spend it all on equipment, no money for who knows how long for parts! What to do? Help! :? I'm becoming anxious to make progress and the wife is pressuring me a little to get it "driveable" so we can use the garage space if need be.

I just gotta ask:
Use the garage space for what!!? Funny how wives think of the garage as "that big closet at the end of the house."
Try this: paint a line across the floor and proclaim "Anything that crosses this line is mine! I can do what I want with it!"
It is a good idea to make sure you have food, water, blankets and an old truck seat or something else comfortable to sleep on first.

It's a simple install. First cut the last crossmember out then move it to the back of the frame and weld it flush against the inside top of the frame and cut a notch for the filler tube. Then take a torch or grinder and take off 3/8" on the inside bottom of each of the frame rails. Then slide the tank in and drill four bolt holes into the frame rails to bolt the tank to. Be sure to get a tank with a drain plug and place a strip of rubber between the tank and frame.http://www.fordification.com/galleries/ ... 0020&pos=2
