Duraspark question

Post by gonzalo medina »

Are are all duraspark blue moduels universal while doing the swap, or do you need to get the one from your specific engine. They all loook the same to me? I see alot of 351's I can snatch up if they'll work on my 390.

blue is by far the most common...the others will actually wire in & work.
we used to use the yellow one in a race application.....the oddball connector was used as a high gear retard

ya gotta love ford engineering :D

OOH! tell me more.
I am thinking about swapping in a duraspark into my 67.
actually, what were the differences in the color coding?
Not to hijack this thread, I am just curious :hmm:
and what about this timing retard on the yellow one? That could be useful in all kinds of applications

Personally I like the red one best. California-only high output module with variable dwell to maintain coil saturation, didn't use a resistance wire, designed for a .060" plug gap, will knock you on your butt.

If I remember right, black and green are the older units, blue is the most common, red is CA only, white has a crank retard, yellow is the dual-mode with a run retard, there's another one I can't remember right now. :hmm:

Donno, sorry.

Last time I bought one, it was about twice as much as the blue ones. The smog checkers look for it on their visual.

No problem with the smog police here.

Don't have em.....yet.

Might have to talk to my local NAPA guy and see if he can get one for me.

IIRC, they were used on '77-'79 California-only Ford/Mercury with a 302.

Should work just fine for a 6 right?

Also is this "red" box basically the same as the Chevy HEI module setup?

Yes, only reason they used it on the 302 was to help it pass smog. That's why they also got the pos VV carb. Forgot to mention it also used a low resistance coil.

Yes, as long as you're not talking about the old 4-pin.

Yeah that is the version I am talking about.

I came across a site that shows how to hook a 4 pin HEI module to the duraspark dizzy.

Supposed to make the duraspark work better I guess.
