Leave it to me
Well leave it to me to take a totally basic task of changing the plug wires, cap and rotor and somehow manage to completely disable my vehichle. I changed everything just like they were supposed to be changed, went to start it up and got nothing. Its turning over but is sputtering and backfiring and refuses to run. I've checked things and double checked them: plugs are on right, in the right order, rotor is on right, caps on securely, getting spark through the cap and to the plugs, getting fuel, still wont run. I think the points are the last thing we can think of and I've got a set ready to go in when I get home. I have a shakey memory of the auto repair guy messing with them when I complained that my truck was running like crap...oops guess I cant say that....how about "horse poopey" (ran fine when I took it in to have the steering worked on ) But then again I might be making that memory up because I'm about to strangle my truck and need a part to blame weelll I'll letcha know how that goes

Do you have the plug wires going in the correct direction? They have to go either clockwise or counterclockwise... make sure you have them in the correct order going in the correct direction.
I'm not sure which direction they go on an FE.. anyone else know?
Also I didn't see you mention checking the coil.. I know you said you're getting spark but....

re: Leave it to me
Does it idle fine, then run like poo when you step on the gas?
Happened to me when I did a tuneup once, looong ago, when I first acquired the truck. It had sat for several years while my dads health was failing, so I bought new cap, rotor, points, plugs and wires for it. After the tune up, it fired perfectly, and idled just fine.
Problem was it had no power, and stumbled and sounded like it was backfiring as soon as it got throttle. Ended up being #7 and #8 plug wires reversed, and yes, I had double checked it, even triple checked it on the side of the road, and still didn't catch.
One more thing to check, is your distributor clamp loose by chance? They CAN loosen by themselves over time, and even though they wont move, you might move it inadvertantly when you mess around with the cap/plug wires. Shouldn't make that much of a difference if you didn't notice it happening, but it's worth a look anyways.

nope wont even start. Got the plugs in the right order, going the right way. I'm not sure. I replaced the points and they were nasty and shot. Things improved a little once they were on, but it still wont stay running. I'm either going to start a thread in the tec area or haul him to the repair shop, as much as it bugs me.

re: Leave it to me
I would quad check your plug wires, trace 1 at a time from cap to spark plug according to the diagram keith posted. Your symptoms indicate that you have swapped plug wires.
When the going gets tough, your doing something right.

re: Leave it to me
I had an old Maverick years ago with a 302 that suddenly developed a condition where it would buck and fart almost every time I stepped on the gas. It was an intermittent thing mostly but after it finally quit one night when out with a girlfriend I discovered the points wire was broken inside the insulation from the constant flexing.
