1 wire alternators.......
Seems so I read or heard that only having 1 wire was bad fro some reason....Excess power can't return anywhere, maybe?

I run one on my Ford for about two years now. No problems. The Toyota is getting one fitted now.
They have their own built in regulators. Not sure about excessive juice problems.

Don't get that one!!! That's a 2G according to the site. The 2Gs have charge plug problems. I lit the wiring on fire with my original 2G. Go 3G. You can get a junkyard alt and it'll put out 130. Probably cost $30.

re: 1 wire alternators.......
Different generation of alternator design, plus the 3G is more reliable. It also has an internal fan. The higher amp 3Gs have a larger case for more heat dissapation as well. The 3Gs use a charge stud as the 1Gs did, which is easier to mount a larger charge cable onto rather than the plug and two little wire combo. They both use the same voltage rectifier/plug so obviously it's also a 1 wire. I don't know why they call them 1 wire alts anyways, they're one wire plus the charge cable/cables.

re: 1 wire alternators.......
From FordFuelInjection.com: In 1996 Ford publicly recognized the fire hazard caused by the 2G alternator and released TSB 96214. This alternator design caused increased resistance and heat which could damage the wire harness and alternator. A small percentage of vehicles actually caught on fire!
The 3G is the most common in junkyards (used for many years in Taurii (plural of Taurus) and V6 Mustangs. It bolts right in (unlike most 4G and 6G which are side mount like the 4G in the picture) and is simple to wire in
65-90ish Stock (1G) Type Alternators:
85-93ish 2G Type Alternaors:
91-Present 3G Type Alternators:
95-Present 4G Type Alternators:
00ish-Present 6G Type Alternators:
Also, on powdercoating, that keeps heat IN the alt, whereas it needs to dissapate OUT of the alt. Polished and chrome alts dissapate heat fine.

re: 1 wire alternators.......
So I guess I have a G1. It has one stud for the batt wire and a stud to ground it. Its also the smaller case. It is the Delcotron 10-S1 case. I don't see a picture of it up there.

Gave up on them a long time ago.
Alternators!!! AAAARRRRGGGHHH!! used to hate the word.
That was until I discovered Raymond Knight of SVAPowerProducts.
Was looking for a small alternator for my ford that put out big power at low RPM. Got lots of the 3G suggestions and others but Ray is in the business and he made me one.
No bigger than a delco 10 and packs out 130 amps at 1800 rpm Man, life is now good.
The man is a genius when it comes to Ford starters and wiring of starter and charging circuits. If he dont know it, it aint worth knowing.
The best I have ever seen at a real good price.
Mention my name, if he is in a good mood it will get you a discount.

re: 1 wire alternators.......
'nother vote for the 3g..no mods needed on the 302. Would suggest running dual belts it you have a lot of high amp accessories.
As a metter of fact, i AM trying to keep up with the Jones'

re: 1 wire alternators.......
The 3G alternators I have seen are 3 wire units. They can be wired using 2 wires. Here is an explanation of 1-wire, 2-wire, and 3-wire alternators. I am sure that there are variations of these.
http://www.alternatorparts.com/what_is_ ... rnator.htm
What is a self-exciting, one - two - three wire alternator?
Self-Exciting Alternator:
Is an alternator that uses a special voltage regulator that doesn't need an ignition wire to activate it. This type alternator only requires a battery wire hooked to it. The voltage regulator contains circuitry that uses the residual magnetism in the alternators fields to determine when to turn the alternator on. The regulator does this by sensing the RPM the alternator is turning, when it gets to a certain rpm the voltage regulator "turns on". Typically you start the vehicle, rev the motor slightly then alternator starts charging. This type alternator is commonly used on custom cars & trucks, tractors and other non standard applications when wiring is a factor. In choosing this type alternator you must consider, do you want
to rev your motor slightly to get the alternator to turn on. Also when using the self-exciting alternator on tractors or other slow turning motors does the engine have enough RPM's to start the alternator charging. This can be overcome by using a smaller pulley or by adding an ignition wire.
One-wire Alternator:
Is another name for the Self-Exciting Alternator mentioned above. You only need connect the battery wire (one-wire).
Two-wire Alternator:
Most standard and all self-exciting regulator alternators will work using the two wire setup. Two wire means that you use the battery wire and an ignition wire to activate the alternator. With this setup the alternator starts charging as soon as the engine is running
Three-wire Alternator:
This setup uses a battery wire, ignition/warning light wire and voltage sensing wire, Three wires.
