Starter not disengaging

Post by F10YRB12118 »

Does anyone have an idea why my stater will occasionally not disengage when starting.

When this happens the engine will not turn off even with the key turned to the off position. The only way to stop the engine is to pull the pos cable off the battery.

This is an intermittent problem so far.

Does anyone have an idea what might be going on.

Is your soliniod sticking? Sounds like something is not cutting the power off once the truck is running. May even look at the ign switch.

The solenoid is stuck. That is why the engine won't shut off. The coils is fed from the terminal on the solenoid and bypasses the lgnition resister wire.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for all your help my starter issue.

I have a back-up solenoid that I might try to do a direct exchange. maybe that might help.

What do you think about replacing the Starter Relay? Might that be a cause as well?

Yours,

This is a ford we don't have starter relays until much later when we started using solenoid on the starter type starters. Only the Solenoid on your truck will cause both of those problems you described.

P.S. if you reverse the 2 small wires the truck will crank everytime the ignition is in on but will not start.

Boy, don't I sound dumb.

I've been reading my new book, Haynes Automotive Electrical Manual (for Dummys) and just learned the difference.

Havn't been home long enough to get to the garage and my beloved 67. But as soon as I do, I'll be replacing the solenoid.

Thanks for all your help

Replaced relay with new/old one from the pick-a-part yard and starter works every time like a charm!

Now if I could only get my brake lights, and turn signals to work. Thats the next big project.

Thanks again for your guidance and assistance.
