Tranny Swap
Currently I have a C6 in my truck. I have been wanting to swap it for a manual sometime on down the road. The thing is, I want a 5 speed for the overdrive. I was thinking of getting a T-5 from a mustang out of a junk yard and doing a rebuild. I know that I would need that adapter plate to bolt the tranny to the bellhousing and have a drive shaft fabbed up. I figure I would just make a long shift rod to link to the shifter and set up a knob mount. What are yalls suggestions and or has anyone ever done this swap. I have read some posts about using the Mazda 5 speed, but Im reluctant in considering that tranny. I just dont think It would be able to handle my FEs power.

Yup, I dont know about that M5R2 Tranny though. There is a tech article here on FORDification.com and from what it says that M5R2 tranny would have been mounted behind 5.8s too. So Im thinking that it probably could hold up to my FEs power just fine. Im only running probably 250-260 at the flywheel anyways. I guess what got me about it is that its a Mazda tranny, and I just figured that it would have only been behind light 6banger motors from Mazda. I didnt know they were in the V8 F trucks. Besides the T-5 and the M5R2 I dont know of any other OD trannies that would work.

Then again I dont even now it that M5R2 would bolt up to or if there is an adapter out there to mate it to the FE bell housing. I will have to do some research, and Ill post my finds here.

Well here is some good and bad info. The link provides more tranny options but the M5R2 it out of the picture for use on an FE because the have integral bell housings.

Lakewood has a skattershield style bell that will accept either toploaders or tremec tko.

i have a 390 ill be throwing in mine, but i dont know what kinda fabricating ill have to do tho, what type of flywheel and bell, where to put the tranny mount, whether to have a 1 piece or 2 piece shaft etc...

Check this out. It says here that tremec makes a bell for FE to use t-5 and 3550.lightning_msd wrote:quit being a post hogjust kidding, seriously tho, i dont think the mr52 is a good tranny, our ranch truck had one, and we went through 4 trannys in the 14 years we had it. i think there garbage. i was thinking about having a t5 if not a t56

re: Tranny Swap
Another option that I'm kinda surprised nobody's brought up yet is the Dodge NV-4500 5-spd transmission. It can be bolted up behind an FE with an available adaptor and is virtually bulletproof, and is the choice for many hard-core off-roading enthusiasts because of it's strength and availability of parts. Check out this thread for more info:

Well the thing is I have a Dodge NV-4500. But it weighs 200lbs. I need a Different input shaft, upgraded main shaft, a rebuild kit, rear yoke, clutch parts, shifter tower, shifter rod, tailshaft housing, spedo gear parts, driveshafts, crossmember, and the 400 dollar adapter plate. I would love to use the NV4500 but for the money I have to put into it to make it work, I would much rather go with a world class T-5 or T-5Z.

You can put an NV4500 in for far less than what you're thinking. I custom built the one in my 70 highboy with a cummins input and gears and a chevy fixed 1350 series output yoke for under a grand. I spent a few grand on several trannies though, then resold the stuff I didn't use on ebay to get my money back.
I Just bought a brand new dodge V8 NV4500 input off ebay for $55 shipped to my door.
You do not need to upgrade the NV4500 5th gear or mainshaft unless you are running it behind a cummins or souped up 6.5. Engine torque is not what breaks 5th gear it's the diesel engine vibrations. A gas engine, no matter how powerful it is, will NEVER break a stock NV4500 mainshaft or 5th gear. An NV4500 is easily twice the beef as a 435.
The brand new top plate is like $150 and instead of buying a complete rebuild kit, just open it up and buy just the parts you need to replace.
The adapter plate kit is like $400 from advance adapters, but do you know how much it is if you buy just the plate minus the drilled out pilot bushing and 8 bolts? It's about $220.
If you already have the NV4500, I can't believe you couldn't get it in your truck for less than putting a weak T-5 or other car tranny in your truck. The T-5 is no stronger than an M5R2.

Wondering about the AOD And the A4ode's? I thought you could mount them to the same Bell housing as an C4 for the 289-351 maybe excluding(maybe not) the 330.
Or any one of the fe bell housings for the 3,4 or even 5 speed trans.
