c6 tranny help

Post by Ken 6645 »

Bought a F150-390 cu in w/ a C6 tranny at an estate sale about 8-9 yrs ago. The tranny was slipping at that time but I went ahead and drove it for about 6 yrs before high gear went south. Traded a 302 for a used C6 out of a 71 Tbird that lasted 6-8 months before reverse went out. Bought a used C6[as is ] that lasted a year ..I'm wondering how hard it would be to rebuilds this tranny myself . Would I need a lot of specialized tools to do this job. The old truck is just a beater but still runs good and I hate to junk it Funny thing about all 3 transmissions is that they worked just fine when the truck was being used but the next morning would not move an inch. Is there something I’m missing or not seeing or is this characteristic of this transmission
Hope you guys can help me out

it shouldn't be hard to rebuild it. there are some seals that require remove pistons from drums and that takes a tool you can make if you habve the ability to do it.

I'm wondering if you had a working kickdown/passing gear if thats gone they can build too much pressure and kill the trans. Or not having a working Transcooler(the one in the bottom of the Rad will work) Can also kill a trans quick.

Eastwood sells transmission rebuild videos- I have one for the C4. Between a video & a good manual on the C6, I'd bet a decent shadetree mechanic could do it.

Here's a link. Its kinda pricey at 30 bucks, but the C4 vid I have seems to be pretty informative & made me feel comfortable w/ the idea of doing it myself. I never have actually rebuilt one, though.

not rocket science .
best to have a big bench where you can remove the parts, take pics , and leave them in order for reassembly.
biggest pain is making sure you get all the old fluid out and everything super clean.a few shavings or some contaminated fluid will start eating up the new seals immediately.

Hi Tim,

I know a few months have passed, but do you still have that C6 rebuild kit? If you do, how much, and could you get me a freight price to NSW Australia?

Cheers,

John.
