Radiant heaters or ?

Post by hillbilly67 »

Does anyone have any experience with the ceiling mount tube style radiant heaters? What do they cost to run? Reliability? Catchup time? This is for a 24X28X8 garage that would be continously heated. Large roll up door, opened 2 times a day, just to move the wife's car in and out. Average 20 below outside. Condensation is a Big no-no. Machining tools with too many bare surfaces.
Any other suggestions?

We have natrual gas radiant heaters in the shop at work 55x80x20, they will run you out. But it rarely gets much colder than the teens here.

They work good in shops here in Texas. We only size for heating here down to 10deg. but they should work fine for you up there. Condensation is minimal.

Wish I knew this also. Almost to Canada and am running a wood furnace. Terrible thing. Always develops chimney leaks which "smoke out" the entire garage.

Check this out. Just a thought; I'm planning this for my steel frame straw bale skin roof with SIP roof in Wyoming. Yes, I'm a closet tree hugger, gonna drop a diesel in the shrektruck and cook it myself too.
BTW these work pretty good but require good insulation and can be supplemented with gas/propane heat

Getting a llittle off topic here but...We're planning to put in the well and septic this summer, and pour a (fully plumbed, wired) slab and steel frame barn/workshop 30X50' 18 feet tall, solar array on the roof with windpower supplement. Stack the bales flat for an 18" wide non structural wall, stucco outside, plaster inside. Then we park the fifth wheel inside for six months or so while I build Casa de Shrek; Timber frame two story, with basement; also strawbale construction with SIP steel sheathed lid, graywater system and radiant floor heating and cooling, about 3200 sqft.
She's getting pretty worked up about it so I'm reasonably certain we can do it on a near cash basis but probably with a little longer timespan.

The only progress so far is talking the boss into it and buying the forty acres...We've got about a year left before I retire then I'm going to do some defense contracting while we finance the improvements to the Wyoming property. Trust me, there will be a blog available for all to see. We're pretty stoked!

Right on. Good luck to you too. Hit 20 on Nov 07? You must've spent Christmas and New Years in Boot Camp just like I did. Sure didn't think that one through too well.

radiant heat is nice, but check out the heating costs, plus you move away from the heater you freeze your bag off. just my :2cents:

I use a custom built forces air unit that burns used motor oil, I used the plans from a old mother earth mag. and modified them a bit. and for real cold days My used oil injected blown foundry ferrous, with this puppy you can heat a 20,000 square shop in minutes for almost nothing plus melt 200 lbs, of alm. in under 10 minutes. both I built my self for under 150 each

the best heat for a garage or shop is in floor heat.
you can pull your wet vehicle in and the next morning it and the floor will be dry.if i ever get a concrete floor for my barn, it will be how i heat.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

wow now that is sorta ingenius  in floor is much better keeps the floor warm and heats the bldg efficiently everything stays warm no moisture buildup in air plus heat starts at the what would be the coldest area to keep warm and rises you could build your own system at a cost savings.
