I'm wanting to learn how to flush, or at least change my Trans. and Trans.Filter are there any step by step instruction anywhere online for free? I did a search on this site but it showed 1122 possible matches and the 3 I looked at did not help......I've heard that changing(or maybe it was flushing) the fluid on a old/high mile transmission can cause it to start to slip and go out because the gears/clutches are clogged w/the old fluid and the extreme cleanliness of the new fluid caused the parts to slip.....I'd like to avoid that if possible....but I'd like to do what's in the best interest of my trans. It is a 1971 w/196,000 miles...it is automatic (c6 I think) w/ 360 motor.
P.S. Is there any step by step instructions for differential fluid maintenance also?
Thanks

re: Transmission Flush Instruction?
It has been my experence that if the transmission shifts properly and the fluid is not black/brown (read as burnt up and severly overheated) then change it . I will say that you should not be surprised if the tranny starts to leak after the change since the only new gasket will be the pan gasket/filter mounting gasket .
To change the filter you will need to drop the tranny pan if you have access to an old baking sheet pan that is great to up UNDER DRAIN pan that way you dont make a compleat mess .
Most of the books that I have read say that you need 3 quarts of tranny fluid after a filter change ( You want TYPE F tranny fluid) I usually buy 5 just in case .
The other way to "flush" the tranny is to remove one of the cooler lines from the radiator and (you will need 2 people 1 person to start and shut off the engine and 1 other person to "guide" the old tranny fluid into a measureing container of some sort (that way you know how much you took out -and how much new to put in .
If you do decide to flush it from the cooler lines soak the fittings in PB blaster or some other kind of penitrent that way you do not twist the lines and kink them -oh and use a flair-nut wrench

Another way to flush the trany fluid is to disconect both lines from the cooler, using a length of trany hose place the return line in a 5 gal. bucket of trany fluid. Place the other line in an empty 5 gal bucket and run the engine and trany untill clean fresh trans fluid is pumped it to the once empty bucket. Make sure you don't let the first bucket run empty. Once the fluid is coming out clean then all you fluid has been replaced. all but the fluid in the cooler that is.

You may want to drain the tq converter as well, remove the inspecion plate ( I think thats what its called ) it should be 4 half inch bolts, find the drain plug also a half inch ( you may need to tap the ingnition to get the drain plug in view ) open her up and let it drain, but be warrned it will probley take about 11 qts to refill the whole thing ( tranny and tq converter)
I can take it apart, but getting it back together is another story!

Helldiver, He won't need to drain t/c if he flushes like mentioned above, because all fluid runs through t/c as engine is running. I usually plan on using a case of fluid (12 qts) you can use a cuople of extras if you just have to be sure it is clean. But you must have an assistant, to shut that sucker down after about 1 qt of clean fluid comes out.

Re: Transmission Flush Instruction?
so I'm getting the transmission back from a rebuild next week. The fluid that came out REEKED of burnt clutch
I'm pretty sure flushing the cooler in the radiator out is a good idea.Should I just flush it with type F?
Seems like solvent would be hard to get out completely.

They make transmission line/cooler flush kits that just hook up and run solvent through the lines that evaporates.
