Swap to 4 spd
Once it gets warm out, I am going to swap to a 4 spd. What do I need to all get from the juckyard? Support, some bracket thing? How hard is it gonna be, need to cut floor?

re: Swap to 4 spd
you will need the following items:
trans
bell housing
flywheel
pilot bushing-goes in end of crankshaft
clutch disc
pressure plate
release bearing
release lever
long spring
z-bar and brackets
pedal and linkage
manual trans inspection cover
4 speed floor hump to put over the hole you carefully cut in floor
driveshaft from 4 speed truck or rework of existing one.
you may wish to switch to a manual steering column and do away with the neutral start switch, otherwise you will only be able to start it in P or N.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

What you will need depends on what tranny you have now, and what you are gonna put in. If you have an auto, you will need all that. If you have a 3 speed, some of that you might have and be able to reuse. Ford np435 4 speeds have the same input shaft length and diameter as the 3.03 3 speed, and the same bellhousing pattern, and you will allready have the z-bar, clutch pedal, etc. installed, just to give you an idea.

Do you think one from the local junk yard would work? They can take it out and give it to me with everything.

re: Swap to 4 spd
If your truck has a manual transmission now, chances are it already has the hole in the floor with the low cover (not a given, but it's possible) as several of the 3spd trucks I've seen have them. You'll need the tunnel cover from a 4spd, though, to clear the transmission. Don't forget the shifter, and the shifter boot as well as all attaching hardware.
Not positive about the difference in tranny lengths, so hopefully someone else can confirm whether or not you'll need the front half of the drive shaft, if not the whole assembly. If you need it, and can get the entire driveshaft, it's probably already balanced and at the worst, you'll only need to replace the u-joints and carrier bearing. Just make sure you mark it before sliding it apart, so it goes back together the same way. Same thing when you replace any u-joints, the yokes should go back together the same way they came off.

Any year of truck that had an FE with a 4spd in it, meaning `67 to `76.cghstrojan08 wrote:What years of truck can I look at?

It has a manual now. So, do I need to take the carpet up and look at the floor? Do I need to cut the entire tunnel out? Got specs on this?

re: Swap to 4 spd
no you can crawl underneath and see, if there are screws protrudeing from around the hump you have a removable cover . there are no specs as such for cutting the hole but once your carpet is out you can see the indentation where the outer edge of the cover sits and cut to the inside of that indent about an inch all the way around.you have to leave material for the screws to go into.
heres a 65 f350 sorry i dont have the correct pic.

Got ya. I will look after I clean the floor. Covered in crap from the snow. So, if I have the removable cover, I can just put the cover in from other truck with the transmission?
