cleaning up alternator
would it be okay to spray carb cleaner or some sort of heavy duty cleaner on my alternator? I need it cleaned up bad, because the motor has all new parts, and it is really dirty. Any help is appreciated. I don't mind taking a toothbrush or something to it, just don't really want to pull it all apart!

No i did that and it killed mine. They make ths stuff that cleans electric motors. YOu can get it at hobby shopps and autozone. That stuff works fine.

Will it clean up the casing as well? Or just the internals? I can't have a mudball at the front of a clean motor! haha. I will look into the stuff and see what it says on the can. Thanks a lot man.

As long as you look at how it is clocked. Pin the brushed , taking it apart is no big deal. I got some rebuilders paint at tractor supply and repainted the black center . Looked like a freshly rebuilt alternator. then didn't use it went with the 3-g. Also just washing it in parts cleaner or soak with degreaser and power washing it won't hurt it as long as you don't try to use it right away let it dry out good.

I musta used 3 cans of carb cleaner and a steel brush on mine, but it did sit for a month while I was waiting on the engine rebuild. Still looks grody though. Gonna go 1 wire new soon.

Be careful, on the inside that rear bearing isn't really sealed very well, you don't want to wash out the grease.
