New project update page: Cleaning the cab's floorpans

Post by FORDification »

Well, I spent the day at the shop today getting the bottom side of the cab cleaned up and reading for the Herculiner. It's about 95% done. More pics are posted at http://www.fordification.com/my67-p42.htm .

:D I LIKE!! Loook at that clean, sound, solid steel!! That's nicer than I thought, there doesn't even appear to be a pin hole of rust thru.

Thats nice!!! I just hope mine looks that good once I get the 2 inches of homemade undercoating off it. I am so tickled to have found this site. By the time you finish that truck Keith I will be just about starting my 67 and now I have a complete "how to" manual with great pics. Thanks

Yeah guys, the $350 I spent buying the truck that supplied this cab was definitely the best money I've spent so far. There is absolutely NO rust on this thing anywhere, aside from a little surface rust on the driver's-side floorpan (inside).

The way I'm planning on applying the Herculiner is to tape off all large holes about 1/4"-1/2" around the edges, so the grommets can seal properly. Those taped-off areas will be painted black to match, so there will be a semi-smooth transistion between the Herculiner and the paint. And it's not going to be a really rough texture...just slightly wavy, not really bumpy, if I can control that part. And it won't be sprayed on, it'll be rolled and brushed on.

Beautiful job, Keith. I'm curious; why didn't you sandblast this area?

Well, if there had been any rust I would have. But since it was as clean as it was, I figured it wouldn't take me any more time to do it this way, and plus I wouldn't have the mess to clean up afterwards.

Well, there might be a slight change of plans. I was poking around online looking for other people's webpages showing how they used the Herculiner, and found a post on one forum where it was stated that it cannot be applied to bare metal, because it's not a rust-inhibitive product. I called the company today and spoke with their tech support department, who confirmed this, stating that there should at least be a layer of etching primer present before applying the Herculiner.

So...I'm not sure I want to fire up the paint gun for such a small job, so I'm thinking about just coating the floorpans with POR-15 and calling it good. However, I did call the parts store today and found that DuPont makes an etching primer in spray cans, so I might go that route. I don't know....I guess I'd better make a decision quickly, so the project doesn't stall.

Yeah, I know that's what I should do. I was really kinda hoping to save the paint gun route till the end, but maybe I should go ahead and think about it. It's been years since I used it, so I'm gonna have to completely re-educate myself in the procedures, though.

Keith when I sprayed my interior floorboard with the beadliner(hippoliner) it went well only pain was mixing it. Nothing you use in this process will be used again,so use stuff you don't mind discarding. But back to the spraying it is fast and uniform and depending how far or close to the area beeing sprayed you can get it pretty smooth or a rough texture. Closer is smoother.
