2 weeks and counting! (update 6-16-08)
well, my "oughta do's" have subsided and I now have a TO DO list. I have 2 weeks until the big mini truck show where it will make its maiden voyage. Lots of work to be done, but it's feasable with some help from you fellow bumpsiders. Heres the list, my questions will follow.
TO DO LIST
Clean and Paint Headers
Spark Plugs
Plug Wires
Test/Hook up coil
Wire harness wiring
carb spacer
vacuum lines
fuel lines
Crank motor/tune
exhaust pipes
header bolts
chrome engine accessories
front brakes
tune rear brakes
bleed brake lines
paint inner fenders
First question, which I have asked before and havent gotten a straight answer on. The coil I have, I need to know what the specs on it are. Without a receipt or box, is there a way to know? Can I use a multimeter to test voltage somehow?
Second question, when I go to crank the motor, I don't have to worry about turning it over without any fuel or spark, as I primed the oil pump right?
Third question, if all is at TDC, the passenger side front piston should be at the top of it's stroke right? How can I tell if this is at the compression, or combustion stroke? I'm guessing, thats when it's 180 out, when its on the wrong one. Which should it be on?
Fourth question, can any show/ tell where all the vaccuum lines go, as well as fuel lines from the pump to the carb, and what ones connect to the pump, and where they come from. I think they were so brittle the broke, so I am in need of new ones.
Fifth question, is there any sort of gasket/donut between the stock headers, and the exhaust pipe itself. It is a true dual, no h pipe or x pipe, no mufflers or nothing. Just pipes.
Sixth question, Am I crazy for asking for a second third fourth and fifth pair of hands?!?!?!?

On #2 and #3
#2 Did you just prime the oil pump during install or did you use a drill and prime the oil in the whole motor? If you did the whole motor should be ok... just don't want to turn the daylights out of it with the starter...
#3 if you take out the spark plug and hold your finger over the hole while you turn it over with a wrench it will blow air out on the compression stroke = TDC
#6 Just kiding if I was there I'd help

yep, primed the whole motor. im not going to crank it for more than 5 seconds at a time. more or less to test spark first. fuel as well, and then from there....i will start trouble shooting. hopefully there is none needed.

i can get you a pic or two of the fuel pump and line routings. what vacuum lines are you talking about? i don't think mine has any-except for the advance for timing.

re: 2 weeks and counting!
well, maybe not vaccuum...but some sort of line. ihad emmissions on mine, but did away with it. so I have the carb spacer, and there is one out the side of the carb, and I want to say there was another one on there somewhere. stock motorcraft carb. any lines that you think have to be hooked up....haha.

from the pump to the carb goes right up the drivers side of the engine block to the left of the water pump and bends behind the dist into the carb.layedout72 wrote:might be a dumb question, but without the truck in front of me...where exactly is fuel line running?

re: 2 weeks and counting!
hey, few questions! first...the starter relay. what size bolts does it mount with? I seem to have either got some growing bolts, or just plain lost them. I think it's the first! haha
Also, in this picture ( http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w43/ ... 1181508551 ) the empty hole to the left of the bolt sticking out, should there be a bolt in there? I hope not.
Also, anyone have a pic of how the alternator bolts up everywhere on a 302? I thought I had a picture, but I don't.

Yep, another bolt goes there... then it is covered by the timing pointer.

Re: re: 2 weeks and counting!
I'm quite sure the bolts there are just cap bolt's and on a windsor or small block the timming pointer goes on the side opposite the fuel pump.71PA_Highboy wrote:layedout72 wrote: Also, in this picture ( http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w43/ ... 1181508551 ) the empty hole to the left of the bolt sticking out, should there be a bolt in there? re: 2 weeks and counting!
right, the pointer is connected, and everything else is as well now. I just saw that random hole and got worried, because it's hard to reach and a longer bolt isn't going to make it through there.
BTW- we can mark off fuel line and vaccuum lines. Finally beat that danged fuel line!
