Just what exactly is stall speed mean for a transmission/torgue conv.?

It is the speed the engine will rev to, in drive, brakes locked, WOT.

Someone explained it to me like this:

In a manual tranny truck to accel. nice and smooth you'd let the clutch out while easing the gas in - say around 1500rpm when the clutch is fully engaged.

To accel. hard and fast you'd raise the rpm's to 3000 or higher and then dump the clutch.

In an auto tranny truck, a torque converter with a stall speed of 15-1800 will give you a nice smooth/slower acceleration - just like easing the clutch and the gas.

a torque converter with a stall speed of 25-3000 will launch you hard and fast when the engine rpm's get to that point - just like dumping the clutch.

Thanks guys. I noticed that it is slightly different between a 360 and 390 for a c-6.

Stall speed changes in relation to torque input. The same converter might stall 1000 RPM lower for a small block as it would with a big block.

Yeah, stall convertors are great for maximum push off the line.... * mainly only when the desired power band is reached at a higher rpm due to motor modifications.

It would be almost pointless to put a stall convertor on a stock motor since most of the power is say idle-5000 rpm. On modified motors the power band is sometimes bumped up to 2000-7000rpm for a performance v8.

Stock motor power is more like idle to 3500. Too high a stall speed is a big waste. I hate driving anything with a stall converter on the street. Throw the slushbox in the scrap pile and put an extra pedal in the truck!

Yup. Your right again. I have built maybee a 1000 slushboxes.

I got "3" pedals in my rides. Reason's. I ain't a girl. I actually like
shifting. I decide. Not the stupid trans. I can build them so they are
pretty responsive. And lightning quick. Don't likee. As a wife trans,
there great. There still "slushboxes" anyway you look at it.
No offence meant. Just opinion.
