Transmission clearance question

Post by mjhaltom »

I have a friend that is attempting to install an automatic transmission behind a 429 in place of a 3.03 manual 3 speed. The tranny he has has a removable bellhousing so I think it must be a Cruise-a-matic of some sort, possibly an FMX.

He is having clearance issues with the floor of the cab. I am pretty sure that he would have that problem with a C6, but C6s don't have removable bellhousings, right? Anyway, if he does have a Cruise-a-matic, would any of them cause this problem? I asked him to count pan bolts next time to get a positive ID. Any insight is appreciated. :fr:

Good question. I think they are ok. The truck is nice. Assuming they are ok?

The FE/automatic trucks came with a removeable transmission tunnel cover for clearance. However, a C6 WILL fit in there, it'll just be very tight. What would I suggest? Well, it's gonna be kind of a PIA, but...

Grind off the rivets holding the second crossmember in...the one supporting the frame where the radius arms attach. With that crossmember removed, the big-block transmission can be lifted straight up and into place. Then you can bolt the crossmember back in with some Grade 8 bolts and nuts.

The only other option is to install a removeable transmission cover in the cab floor.
