re: 71 F250 Paint
I think you could do it all right without taking the body panels off. The only reason I did was I was needing to change-out the front fenders, the doors were off the same parts truck that the fenders came from and in better shape than on the 4x4. Also used the instrament panel, O.E. radio, and a few other pieces. I'll warn you though this method is time consuming and labor intensive. Lots of fun though! The guy across the street was watching out his window for a couple of weeks before he came over and said he used to work in a body shop and was surpised how smooth and nice it looked, he thought I was crazy using a roller to paint it at first but couldn't beleve how nice it was turning out. I wish he would have came and helped with the sanding and bondo, I'm not very good at that.

cool...
I do have to take the hood and passenger inner fender off to replace it.
Do you have to take the outter fender off to replace the inner fender?
Thanks,

Asked Jerry at the body shop (they haven't started on my truck yet) about taking the cab off and he shuddered. He said steering has to be removed and ...Bad Idea.Blue Cloud wrote:Never did that. I'm just going to paint the outside and the door frames. Thats a little more ambitious than I want to be. Maybe the next project.

kaptn, Yeah you have to take the hood and fender off to change the inner fender. It's not as hard as you would think, a helper is a must for the hood, but the fenders are a one-man job tho.

re: 71 F250 Paint
I got home from work this evening around 5 PM and hurried and rolled another coat on the bed. It went fairly good, a couple of "skeeters" lit on the wet paint after I finished but they sand off pretty easy. I'll still need another coat or two to cover the old green color, then I'll Herculiner the inside of the box and tailgate.

Hey XLT...
It's not very hard to remove the steering column.
disconnect the rag joint
undo a few bolts and unplug the column harness.
The column just slides into the cab.
The hardest part I encountered was disconecting the e-brake cable.
If you are not gutting the cab first you might wanna enlist a doz or so of the local ruffiens to help ya lift it off of the frame.
If ya gut it first then 4 people can very easily lift it off and load it into the back of a waiting pickup. That's what FossilDog and I did with my '71 cab...
good luck,

re: 71 F250 Paint
I was off work today and should have put another coat on the bed, but the temp was 99 degrees today, WAY too hot for me! I just stayed in the A/C and looked at the truck all day. All I need is one, maybe two more coats on the bed and then I can start on the doors. I'm trying not to rush but I can see the end and am getting antsy.

re: 71 F250 Paint
I finally got the last coat of paint on the box the other day and installed the tailgate! Looks pretty if I do say so myself. The day before yesterday I done a dumb thing, I was sitting here alone and got to thinking I'd put on the rear bumper. Normally that wouldn't be too big of deal except if you noticed my homemade bumper is alittle big and alot heavier than you'd think. Got it over to the truck before I gave any consideration as to how I would get the bolts on the frame. Long story short, I dropped it on my foot. Now I have a big purple plum for a big toe, doesn't hurt much, just black and blue. Four pairs of steel-toed boots and of course I had on tennis shoes. I'll post some more pics latter today. (just the truck, no toe pics!)

Some pics of the tailgate installed and the bumper set in place but not bolted down.
