tranny and rear end fluids...

Post by layedout72 »

I have (what I believe to be) an NP435 3 speed tranny, and ( i know ) a Ford 9 inch. What fluids should I buy to put in the tranny? Also, to do the rear end?

80/90 gear oil. early ford manuals say 50 wt motor oil. Motor oil will kill a 435 in time though.

bump this back up for a couple new questions. how much fluid does the rear end need, and how much fluid does the tranny need? where do I fill both of them? I am guessing I can seal the rear end with RTV? am i thinking wrong here? where do I fill the tranny? Through the cover that is bolted down?

the 9" uses 5.5qts. I used RTV on mine, and no leeks yet. I filled mine using the vent fitting hole where the brake hose splits.

On the side of the transmission there are two plugs. The one near the bottom is the drain plug, the one that's right about half way up it the fill plug. You remove the fill plug and add fluid until it starts to come out the hole, then you put the plug back in.

The 9" rear has no drain plug, but it does have a fill plug. IIRC it's on the left (driver's) side of the housing on the drive shaft side and you use a 3/8' ratchet to pull the plug. Fill the same way as you would the tranny.

okay, this is what I see.

upper part of the tranny, towards the rear there is a "3" i guess because its a 3 speed. under that, a square headed threaded plug, pointing slightly upward, and then at the bottom of the tranny, where it meets the back end, and there are 5 bolts maybe 6, the bottom one may be the drain. I dont have two "plugs" that I can find though.

The square headed plug is your fill plug.

Are you sure it's an NP435? Those are 4 speeds, not 3.
If it is a "3 on the tree" it is a 3.03 trans.
