rear gas tank install

Post by mnagatani »

The tank was a new purchase of a 69 ford mustang 20 gallon. Installation was minimal with some frame triming of the sides and rear cross member removal. The tank fits just about right. Also, the sending unit that came with it worked with the stock guage! Check out the pics.

I'd like to request more pics, and info on the frame you built for it.

Thanks,

What year/model tank did you order? You said it came with a sending unit? Where did you buy?

Thanks,
Patrick

I know nothing about mustangs... are the fastback, coupe, mach 1, convertible tanks all the same? That's why I asked for the make/model.

They are all the same. The gallons changed from 65 to 70. I think the biggest came in the 69/70. Any mustang vendor sells them. Lots of 65/66 guys put in the 69/70 tank because it has more volume, but bolts in the same. It doesn't matter about convertable, fastback or anything else. They are all the same.

I think the 71-73 tank is bigger (22 plus gallons), but I think it might bolt in different. I will have to check on that.

Regarding the price? I think I paid 120.00. Checking online I saw from "mustang connection" and they had it for 129.00. I bought it a couple years ago and don't recall where I got from, but it seems to be the same price.

It looks like from the pics you did not build a frame, just bolt to the frame and a piece of 1x1 for the rear crossmember?

I was always curious why you have to build a frame, wont the tank slide between the frame from the rear . Just put a cross brace on the frt and rear of tank.

From the pics it seems all the weight of the full tank are on two bolts each side, it were on the inside of frame the weight would be along all the lip of the tank not the 2 bolts.

Just an observation, I havnt done this but am looking forward to

I was curious as to why the lip of the gas tank was below the frame edge, instead of inside it as well. Is it because it will not slide in the frame, or you run into clearance issues with the bottom of the bed, and the top of the tank?

You made me think for second as to why the tank is under the frame and not on the top edge! I installed the tank when the bed was on the frame and that was the only way to get it in there. I'm going to see now if there are any clearance issues to put it on top of the rail and maybe not have the cross member. I'm sure that having the cross bar won't hurt. Stay tuned. Good comments for sure.

I did not build a frame as did the tech article did. So I guess if for whatever there is a reason to service the tank and it needs to be removed, then you have to remove the bed! OUCH.. I'll be thinking about this. Just thinking out loud.
