New Tranny Blues

Post by Ares68F100 »

Just received my new TCI transmission and I am already having some issues. Nothing huge just some questions that arose once the tranny was out of the box.

First the rear tail section between the two is completely different. Not really a big deal. However I would like to make this work for myself without having to either put on the old tail section on the new tranny(not even sure if this would work) or sending the tranny back(also not really an option)

So here are the photos.

What I would like to know is, which slip yoke should I use for the new tranny? Is there one that uses the stock U-Joint size or should I have a custom driveshaft made to go along with the new yoke? Please advise. Secondly what speedometer setup should I use to make this one work. The old housing and gear will not fit in the new tranny it is too large. Again please advise. Here are the photos for real now. Thanks again for all of your help FORDication members!

To change the "tail section" you would have to completely disassemble both transmissions and swap out the tail shaft and tail shaft housing.
Your options are calling the trans company and tell them that they sent you the wrong trans for your application or having a driveshaft made or buying a front pump gasket, pan gasket and swap out the tail shaft yourself (probably voiding what ever warranty that comes with the trans).
I hate it when they paint them silver after assembly.
I would make them exchange it for the correct transmission. They screwed up by sending the wrong trans. A driveshaft is going to cost a few $$. I would prefer to keep the truck driveshaft as opposed to the passenger car (slip yoke) type.

Is this a 4x4 ?? Is there a core charge from TCI if how much is it.
Yes you'll need a slip yoke and drive shaft. Now you might get lucky and find 1 at the pick -n-pull to fit your app with new trans.

Tire size and rear end gear will dictate what gear you need as well the drive gear int he trans. you may want to get also from a close donor at pick and pull.

I have to agree about a big job. I don't know much about autos, but I do know that they are loaded from the front when built and the output shaft, sized for the tailshaft, goes in 1st. so the whole thing needs to be torn down to change the tailshaft and housing. :(
