Slip-yoke driveshafts/ 2 piece

Post by hotrodfeguy »

I have a 67 4X4 250 My front shaft has alot of play in it. The slip joint is bad. I never ran it very fast for the past 10 years of plow duty. But now with going over the body I will be putting it back on the road. What is a good way to solve the problem? Do I need a new shaft? or can this be repaired. Thanks for any info.

With enough time and money anything can be repaired. I just had some work done on my drive shaft. The slip joint was frozen. The shop cut it off and welded a new one on and replaced the stub. I also had all 3 universal joints and the center bearing replaced. All this cost $350 but with the new stuff the truck rides much nicer with less noise and vibration. Mrs. Flatbedford even noticed the improvement.

On worn machinery quill splines I cut long strips of .005" brass shim stock and slip them in on every spline. Really cuts down on tool marks on interrupted cuts.

I don't think that'd be practical for your driveline when you can have a whole new one made with premo spicer stuff for around $250.

On beater mud rigs, I'll peen the splines, maybe even smash them a bit with a hammer or heat it white hot with the torch to deform it a bit and make it a tight fit again.

Man did that ever work I did just that peened them a bit. One tap like I was preparing to drill. And spaced out along the splines. I will se how long this works but thanks. When it becomes a long haul truck I will replace but for right now its a plow truck till the new body is done.
