67/76 tranny swap

Post by Jason67F-250 »

Has anybody done this kind of swap before? If so any advice would be helpful. Right now the 67 has a two piece drive shaft. The 76 tranny has a one piece drive shaft. The yokes are different. What do I need to do? :D Your :2cents: would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jason and welcome.Lots of swap info here but we need a bit more to go on.I'm guessing you have a 67 F250 :) But what trans do you have now? Auto? Stick? 3 or 4 speed? What trans do you want to swap in ? Another biggie, what engine? :) Please post some more info and someone will be glad to chime in.

Just a suggestion but you might want to check in over at the welcome mat forum.Lots of good info and nice folks here. :)

You might want to post some pics too. We are crazy about pics.

Here goes see if this helps.
I have in my 67 f250 a cruise-o-matic with a two piece drive shaft, with a dana 60 4.10,and my engine is a 352. The tranny i want to put in is out of a 76 f250. with a one piece drive line. not sure what rear end or engine size. I hope this helps. I really want to get this truck up and running before winter. I have big planes for this truck.

If both trannies are c6's (which they likely are) you just need to completely dissassemble both transmissions and put your '67 output shaft and tailhousing in the '76 case with the 76 guts.

If that's not an option for ya then using the '76 tranny with the '76 driveline will work, but you'll need to whack about 4" out of the newer driveline since the newer trucks have a longer wheelbase.

this is of coarse assuming that the 76 has an fe engine (360 390).

If a long bed, 133", not sure on the short bed though :hmm: Your 76 F-250 should have a Dana 60 rear-end.

Hello everybody

I finally got the time to swap trannys. Had the drive shaft shortened. then installed. Now I have another question the speedo cable from the 67 has a different end that hooks to the tranny. And the 76 has a spline on the end that fits right in to the tranny. Do I need to take the speedo cable from the 76 and use it in the 67 and if I do will it hook up to the instrument cluster on the 67 speedometer? I hope I have given enough info if not let me know. By the way thanks for all the help and advice.

They have the same speedo cables go look real close. There is the same piece n the tranny you just left one in the tranny and one on the cable.

i can't remember for sure but it seems to me that i remember that you have to take the gear assembly out of the 76 trans and put the one from the 67 in the 76 trans in order to make it all fit correctly. you will not be able to use the 76 cable unless you use the 76 instrument cluster. which will be very hard to do.

The tranny end did not change until the digital age.

It probably had the 90 degree end. That part is so common I took the 90 degree unit out of my 89 GMC TH 400 boom truck and put it in my NP435 to test my speedo gearing

You guys are turning this into rocket science. Yes the speedo connections from a 67 C6 are differnt from a '76 version and do not interchange. You cannot interchange the speedo cable either. The super easy fix here is grab your old speedo cable and pull the old end right off now just push on the new style end and your good to go. You will have to do a little trimming of the cable sheeth to get everything the right length, but it takes a couple minutes.

i didn't know you could do that . i thought it would be easier to just change the gea housing from one to the other. give that a try it might work.

Thank you for the help. That only took me a few minutes. Only three more things to do to the truck and I'll be on the road.
