Manual Transmission Differences

Post by Ripsnorter »

I have a '69 4WD 4 speed and a '71 2WD 4 speed. Both F250s.

the '69 4WD has reverse as far right and down.

'71 has reverse as far right and up.

why the difference? I read someones post mentioning that the four wheel drives had a slightly different transmission, can anyone explain to me what the differences are, is one beefier than the other, etc?

The '69 has a NP435

The 71 has an early T18.

Thanks, looks like I have some reading up to do.

I much prefer the shifting pattern of R down and to the right, but thats just personal preferance. Its always seemed to make more sense subconciously... " I want to go backwards so I pull the lever back" rather than pushing it forward.

I actually love early T18s with the over and up reverse. The vehicle I learned to drive in was a '68 International 1-ton with an early T18 and, to this day, if I'm not thinking too much and try to hit reverse in my F250, I'll go over and up once, feel retarded, then slide the stick down where it belongs.

Both of those transmissions, the T18 and NP435 are very strong and durable. They were used in medium-duty trucks for many years. The T18 is a lot easier to float gears.
