Trans. leak question

Post by Jaybird324 »

Long time lurker here...hardly ever post....but anyway.....I've got a '71 with the 302 and C4....I'm getting trans fluid leaking out from where the shifter linkage attaches....before I go poking around, anyone have a quick suggestion? (I can turn trucks inside out all day, but still don't know much about transmissions) TIA

All you need to do is get the seal for that shaft, drop the tranny pan (might as well change oil and filter while your there), loosen the nut that holds the shifter arm in, pull the shifter arm out, replace seal and button it all back up.

Thanks man...filter is brand new, so at least I don't have to worry about getting a new one. Won't be a bad job at all.

not to bug ya td, but do you have a part # or anything? I've done about everything but break down a trans.....nothing other than dropping the VB?

its not hard to drop the vb . there are just a few screws in it. there might be many that you see but they look different than the one that hold the vb in. i think they have a larger head on them.

There are two seals in there.
The one for the shift shaft is a lip seal. (directional)
The one for the kickdown shaft is just an O ring.
