T18 Gear Oil Ghange

Hey guys,

I'm about to do a gear oil change on the Borg Warner T18. I bought plenty of 75W-90 gear oil, now just a quick question:



Is the plug with the red arrow where I fill the trans with new fluid? Manual says 7 pints of oil. How do you fill it if you can't get the bottle of gear oil up there?

Thanks for the help! I'm kind of in a rush, kinda need to do it tonight. Going to be hauling a few hundred miles this weekend and would feel better with fresh gear oil.

Any idea what this mystery hose is? It has a thumb screw jammed into it and a hose clamp keeping it from leaking. It's right at the back of the cab, you can see the outside of the utility box behind it. The wire is for a CB radio antenna that the previous owner had. I don't think this is all that important to take care of tonight though. As long as it isn't a brake line.

i think thats the evap system. goes to a charcoal cannister up by the passenger side frame rail almost under the core support.


never seen two hoses hooked into one like that do you have an aux tank?

If it is, it's not factory, or it's been replaced at some point. I don't believe Ford used those types of hose clamps back then. could be mistaken though!

As for filling the tranny with gear oil, two ways I can think of right off the top of my head. One, is to get a pump from the parts store that screws onto gallon jugs (like oil, anti-freeze, etc). The business end usually has a couple clips that hold it in place in the fill hole, so you dont have to hold the hose there, and is a simple press pump. You push down, gear oil comes out.

The other way is to get a funnel with a hose attached to it, long enough to reach from the engine compartment. Make sure the funnel is clean (and new hose, any clear tubing would work) or if you have the cover off inside the cab you could do it through there as well.

You don't just pour it in, you pump it in with a hand pump. You can usually find one in the oil section at the local auto parts store.

Either that, or you can remove your transmission tunnel cover and use a funnel with a hole extension.

You can also take out the shift lever and pour in the hole till it comes out the level hole.

Well, I got it done friday night. I didn't have a pump, nor time to get to an auto parts store. Instead, I went to the hardware store and bought some clear plastic 1/2" ID tubing. Stuck the one end in through the fill hole and ran the other end up behind the bellhousing to the top of the engine bay. Then I clamped the end of the tube around a funnel and gravity fed the gear oil into the transmission until it overflowed, which was almost exactly the 3.5 quarts specified in the owner's manual.

Not nearly as much oil came out though, I hope to God I don't have any long term damage.
