tranny troubles

Post by cruzerman350 »

hi,
my name is miles and i just bought a 67' f-250 camper special and im having some trouble with the tranny. when i bought it i was told that the tranny was recently rebuilt but it need adjustment. i took it to a shop because im not really good with automatics and they did a full service on it and it got worse. basically i have reverse but it will not move in first gear. the shop adjusted everything and it only got worse.

i don't know anyhting about this truck to be honest so i have a few questions.

1. does it have posi or limited slip in the rear diff?

2. what tranny is in it, a C4 or a C6?

3. if it has limited slip thats going bad would that be my problem or do i have to have the tranny rebuilt again?

thanks
-miles

Welcome!

1) It is quite possible that it does, take a look at:

http://www.fordification.com/data-1967.htm

and try to decode it

2) In a 67 it is probably an MX if it is original. (Is the case cast iron or alum?)

3) Based on your description, I doubt it.

Will it move an any forward gear? Manual 2nd? I assume the shops "adjustments" included the shift linkage?

We will need to know what transmission it is to help diagnose, and if it is anything other than a C6 I am going to be no help at all.

Tell us some more about your truck? Engine, options and so forth, also we like pictures, we are funny like that.

i honestly dont know much about the truck except that it is a camper special and that the previous owner did alot of work on it before i got it. it will not move at all in any forward gears but reverse works perfectly. from what i knwo aobut auytomatics this means that the clutch packs for the forward gears must be worn out and the reverse band is still in good shape. i thought i would ask here anyway jsut to be sure. i am thinking if i cant fix the tranny i have fora reasonable price i found a TCI tranny in jegs for $700 that looks pretty good to me.

its not a c6 it looks like a c4 but i have never seen a mx fmx or cruiseomatic. i would say c4 though. you are probably right about the clutch packs going bad.

Did we lose post here? :?

I had posted two replies, one stating that I am pretty sure that is a C4

and one saying

Nice truck, I like the intake and carb...

That's what I'm seeing. You replied before Fordman. Then Fordman replied and your post disappeared. odd.

i would rebuild what i have. i hate to speed hugh amounts of money on stuff like that. but i have read here that the c4 is a hard tranny to rebuild properly. i tried it once when i was a kid. and i couldn't get it to work.

that is too much to rebuild that transmission. it should be about or less than the price of a new transmission.

I've heard a couple of horror stories about TCI rebuilds.

If I had to have one, I'd check with Jay at Broader Performance.

http://www.broaderperformance.com/

There are "pan fill" and "case fill" C4s.

$600 s really high for a junk yard transmission, should be in the 200-350 range.

dang, I posted reply last night, we're it go? had similar in turbo 350 (GM trans) was front pump went out, would drive around fine in reverse, not pull at all forward. Harbor Freight trans jack around $70, used junkyard trans maybe 200, and a buddy to kinda help. I have done it with floorjacks, and no jacks, and sure happy with 70 I spent for my trans jack have used twice now. check around trans shops, I was quote 800 if I drove car in (turbo 350) or 400 to bench build if I walked through door with it plus reman factory torque converter and no warranty if they didnt' install. But, I had prices ranging from 1800 down. You can find a local shop that can rebuild older automatics pretty easy.
