Overdrive Manual Transmission
I went to a Swap Meet over the weekend and found a manual transmission from a newer Ford truck that was supposed to be a 4 speed with overdrive. (This tranny was not the 1 piece M5R2 5 speed that was used in the F-150's) This tranny looked like it would have bolted to my FE bellhousing, had a coarse spline for the clutch disc and had an extremely long tailshaft. The shifter went through the top of the case and a plug that I think was for the reverse lights was on top op the trans in front of the shifter.
Does anyone know what model of trans this is or what it may have been put in?
Thanks,
Jeff

are you SURE it has 5 gears, 4 and an OD?
It sounds like a 1980's AMC Tremec T176/177/178 4 speed with a car tailshaft. Some had the 1:1 4th gear replaced with .9/.8:1 "overdrive"
They look like you described and have 1-1/8" 10 spline input shafts and ford butterfly pattern belhousing mounts. Often sought after for ford smallbock V8 conversions.

re: Overdrive Manual Transmission
It may have been 4 total, including overdrive. After looking at transmissions on the web I am wondering if it could have been a TOD--three speed plus overdrive. I wish I had noticed the location of reverse on the shifter. Any Ideas????????

You were barking up the right tree. TOD=Tremec t170.
Any opinion on putting this tranny behind a stock 360 in a 68 F-100?
Thanks,
Jeff

re: Overdrive Manual Transmission
I'm runnig the TOD behind my 360 in a 69 F-100 2WD. I like it because it's geared for driving around town and highway. The first gear is not a granny gear and not the best for pulling stumps, but it'll get good milage on the highway. It will bolt to the FE bell and cross member witout modifiactions but you'll have to shorten the front drive shaft. I dont have the exact lenth right now.
The TOD is getting harder to find. There came behind early 80's F-150 2WD and 4WD with 300 sixes.

Thanks for the input. Next month when this swap meet is held again I need to take a much closer look.

re: Overdrive Manual Transmission
I had one of the earlier 3 speed to 4 speed conversions (T85 I think?) that I ran in my '66 Fairlane for awhile, then swapped to auto (so my wife could drive it) and my buddy Mike scored the trans from me to put into his unibody F series ('66?) with a 352 (IIRC) and it held up quite well AFAIK. He's in CA now.
