Dana 70
A friend of mine will give me his '86 F350 4X4 diesel dually dump. Is the dana 70 from the '86 a direct bolt in for my '70 F350? This one has shock mounts and may even be limited slip
The last time I looked at the truck the springs and rear looked identical to mine.

Well, I'm pretty sure the frames are different width, so you'd have to relocate the spring perches.

springs on the 86 should be wider too. 3 inch i believe. and like keith said u have to meaure the width of the perches. hope it works

Spring perches are in a different location, you would have to cut off the old ones and weld on new ones to match your leaf springs.
It may also not be a Dana 70. Check and make sure it is, otherwise you just adopted a corporate full floater. Not horrible. But not as durable as a Dana 70.
The corporate full floater looks just like a Dana. Check the housing for the "70" casting mark. It should be on one of the side ears of the housing facing the yoke (driveshaft).
Check your flatbed rear diff. to locate it.
Then check the 4WD. 4WD may also have the tag on the rear diff. cover that lists the gear ratio.
if it says 4.10 its an open 4:10-1 ratio.
if it says 4L10 its a locker at 4:10-1 ratio.
Being its a Diesel, its prolly a 3:73-1 or a 3:54-1. A 4:10-1 would push a diesel pretty hard at 70 mph.
Good luck with it.

What's a corporate rear? Ford used Dana 70's and sterlings. They look very, very different from one another. The sterling is a very well built axle and is an equal to the D70, some say better.
Seen a stock sterling with a spool hold up for years behind a 600 horse big block and 46" tractor tires in Oregon mud. Nothing wrong with them.

I'm gonna go have a closer look on the weekend. If he's giving me the truck, I suppose it would be worth taking as long as the neighbors don't mind another junker in the driveway. I don't think I'm going to get involved in putting the diesel in my bump. I'd be better off putting a new cab on the '86. I'll post more after I see it again.

The 70 and the sterling were the only two axles used under F-250/F-350 pickups for most of the 80's/90's. The 250's used a good number of Dana 60's in the lighter trucks and Dana 61's in the heavier ones in the early 1980's until the sterling was introduced around 84/85. When the sterling came out they had two models: the full floater and the lighter semi floater. I went to look more closely. I even brought a tape measure. There's no tag on the rear, but it does look about the same as mine.
The springs are the same. I measured the length, the width of the leaves, the number of leaves, and the location of the axle on the springs. The only difference is that the axle is wider from the springs to the backing plates. The frame on both trucks is 34 inches.
This truck also has the lower shock mounts that attach to the axles with U bolts.
Rear shocks for FLATBED!!!!!

That's a heck of a good friend to give you a truck like that! 1 ton 4x4 diesel dumper with a hydraulic winch. WOW!
That rear is a sterling, not a D70. Notice the cast in "gussets" around the axle tube sockets in the center chunk and the diff cover looks nothing a dana axle.
It appears from the picture like it might have the variable rate proportioning valve setup mounted on the axle. That is a very, very cool setup to have.

Likely $700-800 in decent shape. Some will say more, but the later dana 60 front axles are pretty common and dually axles are usually less desireable unless you find someone looking to convert thier single wheel truck.
