glove box delete, for mounting radio

Post by import600 »

In my truck I love the way the stock am radio looks, but I don't care to listen to am. So what I did was cut a plate out of some sheet metal, to cover the glove box hole exactly, and then i plan to mount my radio there, I have a template made with measurments, It's just a matter of scanning it.

I'll go into detail once I post the template.

Sounds like a good idea, but I hope it's remote control.

thats a cool idea. id love to have that done to my glovebox! this way you can have your stock radio to keep the truck original, a nice stereo hidden where it wont get stolen. awsome. are you selling your truck :( because there is a for sale sign on the dash :? .

That may be a for rent or for hire sign. Or it is a for sale sign with a giant X over it so people will stop bugging him about it. LOL

Haha. the sign was from the PO. He taped one to the passenger side window. the tape failed and it fell inside the door because of crappy window rubber. So when i took the door panel off i found it, just haven't thrown it away.

The truck isn't facing the road. So no one stops. Thnak goodness. lol

Haha, amp and subs? umm I've got no plans for them. I do have plans to mount 4 6.5 inch speakers under the seat. Anyone know where you can get boxes for those?

I think Home Depot sells those, but they are not in a kit and they are a one size fits all. 8'x4' mdf & liquid nails.

You are going to have to make one. I don't think you are going to like the sound though. It will be distorted and not enough low frequency to get the "feal" or sound that a sub would give.

Ok, so what i did is took a bunch of measurements for it. cut up some cardboard, to get the template set, once I hade the template all fabbed up I just traced it. Then made everything straight and square. then cut it. folded in the tabs. Real easy. I don't think I will cut out the hole for the radio rather I would make a couple slices and fold more tabs back to allow for support for the head unit.

Check out the template, if you have questions, ask. You know I thinki would consider making a few. if i got enough response I could always have a shop cut this out of some thicker steel.

MadMaxetc, I just want them to work as speakers but I don't have a way to mount them. How would you suggest to so they don't get muffled like you said? Do you really think it will be muffled? I was imagineing a box like you would have in your home. mounting the speakers up the same way. I'm up for any suggestions. so feel free.

But thanks glad you guys like the plate.

I have a 6.5" 3-way speeker in each door and they sound great! I also have run a 8" or 10" sub behind the seat on newer trucks (73-79) but can't do that yet as I still have the Gas Tank behind my seat. In a truck you realy don't need Front & Rear speekers. I mount 2 small speekers under the dash in the stock location and use them as the front and the 2 on the doors as the rears. It sounds good. You want to make sure that the speekers ar not to close to your ears. I would not mount them on the pillars behind the doors cuz then all you will hear is that 1 speeker. Headligner is the same thing. Keep them 2' away or more for best results.

I personally wouldn't run anything but a subwoofer under the seat, it wont image or stage right at all. Bass is non directional to an extent, thats why u can have it in the trunk, but it fills the cabin and you cant tell it's in the trunk. higher frequencies are far more directional. It's going to sound like your sitting on someone! I would make some sort of kick panel or the like for a componant set and be good to go!

Hey Dan, do you have any pictures of those speakers in your door? I wanted to see you setup.

Thats a great idea. Old ford trucks are pretty easy to be broken into so that could save you from having you tunes stolen by some punk.

You MAY still want to look into using a dash kit from some car that has a flat face on the dash. I know they have metal sleeves, but other than that they mount in plastic. Im not so sure you won't have a crazy grounding circle if it's completely mounted to metal....Just a thought.
