i live right next to the american river.( right by the rainbow bridge area of the river) there is alot of nice mountain bike trails running along it and is free. you just have to pay for the nice beach area. i think i might know the bridge you guys are talking about.

that bridge is on the west side of 101...

I lived on the northside... near where they built Arco Arena. (east of that toward Rio Linda). It was called the Robla district when I lived there and was incorportated into the city of Sac during the time I was there...
It was nice when I first moved in... just empty fields and a few older single family houses... I rented a decent 3 bedroom on 2 acres for $350.
In the two years I was there, there was a building explosion in that area.
I could not believe how fast things went up.
Everytime I'd leave town and come back after a few days, there was a new multi family unit where there was an empty field when I left...
Now, I live and work in a one stop light town in SW Washington, and sometimes it feels like it is getting to big.
I love it here... In two hours I can go from the beach to the pristine rain forests of the Olympic peninsula. I can be hanging in Seattle or chillin' in Portland (which is my preference).
In less than two hours, I can drive to the driest place in the state (Squim WA), and in just a few more minutes be in the wettest place the Olympic National Rainforest. From there, it's not much further to where you can catch a ferry ride over to Seattle or Victoria BC (I haven't gone to V BC yet, but plan to).
No sireeeee, there ain't no way I'd ever move back to Sac...

Take care...

I grew up in Elk Grove, which is south of Sacramento, but moved to Seattle in '80. I'm trying to think of that bridge thing myself, but am not sure what it is you're talking about. There is an old building on 1-5 just west of downtown before you drive into town, which is still there (I was down in July visiting my Dad), so maybe that's it. It's a big interesting old building. As for Sac... it's not all that bad. Hot as hades at times, which I can't get used to anymore when I visit. It's about 30-40 degrees hotter than Seattle most of the time during the summer. But I miss floating down the river. It's too cold here to do that ever.

Hey Whoaaanelly...

Washington has some of the best white water rafting in the country... bar none. My house-mate is an avid white water rafter...
I don't do it because of a back injury that left me 35% permantly disabled... it was actually my injury that led me to Sac.
I was an Easter Seals patient there for nearly a year and a half. They decided that I was a good as I was gonna get... but as a last ditch effort, they referred me to a sports medicine specialist out in Folsom. He had me walking without a cane after a few months... that was back in '85-'87 after my orthopedic surgeon diagnosed that I would be in a wheel chair the rest of my life.
Now, 24 years after the initial injury, I have not spent a single day in a wheel chair... largly due to the physical therapist in Folsom...
For that, I thank God...

Kap... The operative in my comment was "float", meaning it's so hot and so we're in inner-tubes just floating down the American River or one of the other bigger streams around there. I've never done white-water rafting, but maybe I will... someday. Sorry to hear about your injury. I have a friend who broke his neck about 10 years ago and worked really hard to return to somewhat a normal state. He's not 100%, but he's not in a wheelchair where they said he'd be. So, yes, miracles do happen.
