Transmission Cooler Heeelp!!

Post by jguajardotx »

I am a little confused what to do when...... I remove my 3 speed from my 67 and bolt up my new c4. I know I will need a trans cooler, but will this cooler run directly to the tranny or will I need a whole new radiator as well?? Just confused on how the whole things works..... :dk:

There should be plenty of room to install a seperate tranny cooler that is independant of the engine coolant radiator. They're not too expensive and there are several manufacturers to choose from.

I beleive there are 2 options. You can get a seperate trans cooler that lines will run to from the tranny. This from what I've seen mounts behing your radiator. You can get a new radiator that the tranny lines connect at the bottom of the radiator.

A couple of years ago, I "accidentally" put a hole in my stock radiator. I have a inline 6 300, 3 on the tree, so the stock radiator was pretty small. Only radiator I could get was for bigger engines so it was much bigger. very glad I got this one, temp gauge barely budges, plus it has the holes in the bottom for when I get a C4 for the cooler lines.

If money's tight or you don't want to get into the new radiator yet, then just get a nice large tranny cooler kit and go ahead and mount it onto the front of your radiator.
Cut the hard lines so they are just under the radiator and finish up with the rubber lines and fittings that come with the kit.
That way, if/when you do get a tranny ready radiator, the hard lines will be in approx. the right position and you can just move the cooler to the new radiator. Then you can put the cooler in-line with the radiator.

Hard line into radiator
Rubber line into cooler
Rubber line out of cooler to hard line to tranny.

I have pics of my in line set up if you want them.

Thanks for the help fellas. Ya Rangerman those pics would be nice. I removed the 3 speed today and noticed that the c4 I am gonna install is longer. Will a drive shaft from a 67-72 "automatic" work for my c4??
Anyone??
