Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think a C4 was ever put behind a big block FE or 385 series engine. The C6 or FMX were the 3-speed automatics frequently put behind an FE block.

Well then I stand corrected. :)

It was my understanding that the C4 tended to be used with the smallblocks, and the C6 or FMX with the big blocks. I guess the bell housings were cast at one time or another to mate almost any combination.

No, the C4 was never behind an FE. They were only installed behind I6 engines and small-blocks (302/351W). There were a few made to fit behind a 351M, but they're pretty rare.

I've also never heard of a C4 behind a 460.

Not sure if ford did it but I do know they made a bellhousing to bolt a c4 to a 460.

C4's are very popular among drag racers. There making aftermarket bellhousings for FE/C4 as well as 385/C4

venniesempire,

I have a C-4 here that came out of my old Bronco (76'), that had been put through about anything you could throw at it (including spinning 38" tires for 10+years). Plus my "Challenger" stunt one day, launching straight up a 45 degree hill into the air and landing on the gas)! That episode snapped the front CV's. They are built Ford tough for sure.

Not quite sure I would want to bolt up an FE behind one or not though, (I think a FE could/would snap a C-4 in half being the torque monsters they are)!
I do have just the opposite though, (a C-6 with integral small-block bell-housing). Got it when I first wanted to slap a 302 into the bump, (looking more like 460 now though).
