nine inch?

friend gave me a 9 inch from a 67 swb. got it home and put it on jack stands and when i spin the the wheels the the other does'nt spin but the d/s coupling does. are the axles broken or is this a posi or what? thanks :thup:

um that should just be a standard open rear end!!! can you turn the other axle and it do the smae thing? if so id say there is no problem!!!

ok, i have another off of my 70swb and when i spin the wheel the othe turns the opposite direction. on the 67 the other wheel won't spin.if i put this on my truck what kind of traction will i get? one wheel or two wheel?

This one sounds like a limited slip of sorts, (a set of clutches inside). They work pretty decent for traction, (one wheel starts to spin, then the other wheel will "kick-in" for traction). The way most 9" rears came from the factory if I'm not mistaken.
Aint' really that hard to make either of the 9" er's positive while you have them pulled!

If I'm understanding the right :? when you turn the drive shaft pinion only one side turns and the other doesn't... can you physical turn the side that doesn't??
If not then either the brake is holding it from turning or the axle bearing is frozen keeping it from turning.
If it was a posi both wheels would turn and if a brake or bearing stuck on one side you wouldn't be able to turn it at all (Unless the posi was really wore out or broke)
Sounds like an open diff to me on the 67 it just has something holding the one side that is not turning.

I agree....if it's a locking rearend, both wheels will turn the same direction when off the ground. If you spin one wheel and the other doesn't move, it's just a very-used open rearend.

i think something is messed up with the first one. i have never seen just one wheel turn and the other not. try turning the center pinion and see what happens. the second one sounds fine it is a regular rear end nothing locking about it. it should turn opposite of each other. unless it was locking then i am unsure which way they would turn

when i turn the pinion the left wheel turns but the right will hardly turn. after a while the right wheel started to stop like it was getting caught. i think the axle id broke.

This is why the 9 inch Ford rearend is even the choice of axles for most drag racers, (even the Chebby powered ones)! It a pretty simple job to tear into it to check it out. (Once you pull the axle shafts, sometimes they can be a pain).

the new 67 9inch is an open carrier (or wasted posi). When turning 1 axle, whether the DS yoke or the opposite axle turns depends on which has less friction.
If you hold the yoke turn one axle the other will turn opposite.
