Finally getting started on the CS
After waiting for over a year, I am finally getting started on the '68 CS.
I've been workin' on the Bump trailer and Olde Skool to keep me from goin' nuts while waiting to get this project started.
My buddy Kyle and I were supposed to start on this last winter, but he had a 3 foot diameter fir tree fall on his house...
he was finally able to move back in a couple of months ago.
The storm did around $130,000.00 dollars damage to his nearly brand new two story home.
I was only able to get over there one evening this week after work.
I'm really hoping to have the engine out and on the stand Saturday.
Here's the pics I got so far.. I'll take more as the project unfolds...
Shoulda got the hood painted before the rain set in
Got the hood off
Engine compartment 1
Engine compartment 2
Nasty wires & rust
Rad out fan off… lots of rust.

Project update....
Spent most of the day over at my buddies workin' on the CS...
We made incredible progress...
Got the engine out and on the ground...
Z bar... check out where the PO hooked the spring from the clutch arm (brake line)
hooking up the hoist
out it comes
engine out
Can anyone tell if the tranny is an NP435 or is it a T-18?
The one I have to replace it with is definately a 435...
if this one is a T-18 will the shifter from a it work on a 435???
holy floor
removing header flanges
I'm really tired and sore from crawlin' all up under it, but it feels really good to finally get to this point.

re: Finally getting started on the CS
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the input...
I'll probably take the camper back off of it...
It's only been on there about a month now.
I had the camper sitting on a cement pad in the vacant yard next door.
The city made me move it, so I had to put it on the CS so I could move it.
I wanna use it a couple of times after getting the CS put back together before I take it off.
I'm gonna sit it on the bump trailer and park it back where I had it.
(the city never did anything with the lot next door)
I figure with it on the trailer I can move it real quick if they say anything.
Eventually, the camper is gonna be gutted and everything moved into the bus, when it's ready.

Troy, look at the tower above the foam insulater. It's shiney silver. Also note the vertical bosses in the casting on either side of the red shop rag.The bosses support the shifter pivot pins. The pins also anchor the gear shift hold down collar. On a T18 the shifter pivot pin slides into a hole in the tower and is held in place by the gear shift collar that threads onto the tower.

re: Finally getting started on the CS
I wuz pretty sure it wuz a 435 all along...
because of the shift pattern... reverse is over and back towards the seat instead of forward toward the dash
After I got it out, I didn't see the NP with a gear around it embossed on the top... I am guessing it's probably under the foam.
It looks a little differant than the one I have for replacement.
The replacement tranny came from a truck w/a 460...
it is only supposed to have about 2000 miles on it.
I've bought other parts from the guy I got it from so I'm pretty sure it is a good one
The tranny is sorta stuck where it is for the time being.
there is no way that it is gonna come out of the bottom...
gonna have to hook up the hoist to it...
with the camper on it, I can't jack the body up enough...
I was really hoping thatr it would just come out, but with it on the tranny jack, it won't clear the frame.

Hey Kap, here's a suggestion for your trans extracation problem.Remove the floor mat and trans tunnel then reach thru the passengers door with the floor crane to lift the trans. After the trans is airborne remove the tranny jack and set the trans on the floor.Pull the crane out of the way, lay the trans on it's side and drag it out from under the truck.

11/7 project update
Worked on the CS a couple of hours after work today.
Got the tranny out from under the truck. It was pretty easy.
I lifted it up high enough with the jack that the input shaft was sitting on the cross member.
The I loosened the strap., and picked up the back of the tranny and rolled the jack outta the way.
Then I just sat the tail on the ground. Next I picked up the input shaft and sat the front end of the tranny on the ground and just slid it out from underneath... really easy... much easier than messin' with the hoist.
It's definately a 435... the NP was under the strap...
Next, I removed both the outer and inner passenger side fender.
Had to cut the upper cab bolt (the one inside the door jamb) with a sawzall.
The bottom cab bolt also spun out and I had to use vice grips to hold the fastener so I could remove the bolt.
The only real bummer was that the bottom grille bolt busted out and tore the grille tab.
I'm also gonna have to replace the rad support... I was hoping once I got the inner fender off, that the support would be ok, but it wasn't.
I have a good one so it's not that big of a deal, as long as I don't tear out anymore tabs...
Sorry no pics... I was in a hurry and forgot to grab the camera...
