if its an after market wiring harness it could be for a power ant. My friend with the 65 chebby truck went through that same deal..and I think his was even purple..but guess it all depends on the kit..good luck

It is the stock switch harness though, the after market harness just didn't have a wire coming up to the switch for that one, but it works.....

I do think the coil wire gets a little hot though....and it may be from trying to start it a good bit of times in a row, but I don't want it to keep doing that if it's just from it being in that ignition position or whatever where the coil always gets power when the truck is running.

hope the purple wire aint the resistance wire.

See, it had that on the harness diagram but a different post. It very well could be that. I will trace it tonight on the diagram and see where about it goes. Would this keep the coil wire cooler?

Correct me if i'm wrong but it would splice into the Instrument panel wire off the regulator correct? If I am not using that wire (instrument wire) would it be okay to run that purple wire straight to the Instrument spot on the regulator?

i think it gives enough resist. to keep from frying the coil.

Well, I'm not using stock gauges, so I will run that wire straight to the regulator tomorrow or next time I work on the truck. Thanks for the heads up!

actauly i think it ties in with the wire to the coil.

i'll check.

from what I saw, the only resistance wire was the coil wire itself, which split off to the starter solenoid. But when looking at the wire in the stock harness, there was no resistor on the coil wire itself. Though in the quick ref 72 diagram it does show that it is a resistance wire... but when looking at the 70 diagram it doesn't show a resistance symbol on the coil wire. Is it possibly "built in" to that plug on the switch some how?

Now, I see that the 1970 full diagram shows that the coil wire some how splices off into the instrument cluster plug....

edit: now I am totally confused as the 70 and 72 show it different than what my switch is.

ok scratch last post if it is solid purple(violet) i connects into a red/green wire that goes to the regulator plug. goes somehwere in the cluster too.

it may be for the shunt for the ammeter. yup to the ammeter. in a 70/71 its stays purple into the cluster on a 72 its red/green.

also pugs between 70-72 are sized dif according to full instrumentation or dummy lights the dummy lights plug being shorter.

you may wanna double check as i just noticed my plug may have had some rewiring as some prongs go nmowherer.

is there an actual resistor somewhere in the stock pink coil wire? I couldn't find it on my old harness....

ok the pink wire is in itself the resistor.

I'm lost now i have a mid 71(may) cluster and atwo 70 full instrument wire harnesses and the 71 board pins out diff than the 70 harness's plugs do. so now i think i know why my 72's cluster acts a litlle wonky. i may have a 70 cluster in a 72 with 72 wiring.

but 72 should have the purple or red/green wire on the top post for the harness.
going into the cluster. according to the quick refference.

ok got out the book in 72 i know they done away with using the i terminal on the regulator.

not sure where it connected after that.

update:

just talked with keith. you can get away ewithout that since its jud\st for the ammeter. and hook a volt guage to something thats only live with t he accessories/truck running.

thanks a lot. will do that. Just didn't want this coil wire being hot and not needing to be. It's not unbearable hot, just hotter than the other wires.

probably just that hot from trying to start it as it was getting 12v when you was kickig it over.

once running it should drop to between7-9v.
