well, I think my 4speed is on the brink of taking a crap. I've been contemplating going with an automatic tranny this time around. which tranny, the c4 or the c6, would be more at home in my '70? which one would be the easiest to swap in?
I have two c4's available to me but I don't think it would be too difficult for me to locate a c6. oh, one of the c4's only has about 800 miles on it and it's built right.
If you have a good C-4 and don't plan on pulling very large items go for it.
If you are looking for fuel mileage with an auto you might want to consider and AOD that has be properly rebuilt and has the updates for reliability.
As far as installation the two trannies I believe install the exact same way.
also check your yoke end to see if it is a slip on or bolt on. If it is a bolt on you will have to get a new yoke. Not to hard to do. Just visit your local junkyard
oh, I was under the impression that the c4 and c6 were overdrive trannys. ok well, what AOD would you recommend and out of what vehicles can I find it?
I know that the earlier versions were not computer controlled and defenately need the updates done to them before putting behind your motor.
Any good tranny shop should be able to help.
I take it your truck is a small block. If its not, an aod will not fit behind a big block with out an adapter. From what I read aod's were pretty good transmissions. I have also heard taht the shifting is odd in the fact taht under a normal load it will skip a gear. 2nd or 3rd i forget. Aod's are controlled by a tv cable ( throtte volume ) and if not adjusted right will fry the transmission. Aode's are the predesesors to the aod's. Its just an electronically controlled version of the aod that is built tuffer. if you want the aode you will need a stand alone controller. If you have a big block engine then your limited to and e4od which is electronically controlled and you will need a stand alone controller also.
And if you have an FE engine, the C4's won't fit it without a custom bellhousing. Can you say: ?
A C6 will fit but make sure you get a tranny made for the FE series.
A C6 made for a 429 or 460 wil not fit a 352,360,390,427, or 428.

might be interested. how do you think this will act in my truck? what kind of 5speed is it? will it handle a heavy truck? I had thought about going 5speed before but a lot of people mentioned that I might not be strong enough for such a heave truck. enlighten me.
i had it in my 70 short bed with a blower. it was a roller 302 with motorsports f cam and dart sr. heads. b&m 144 blower 8 pounds of boost. the only problem i had is that it like to take a rip the radator off it mounts and it hit the fan twice. then i made some heavy duty mounts. my truck only had 3.00 gears and didn't hook at all but it was still faster then a 2003 cobra mustang. here a pic of the motor in my car and a pic of my old truck.

its a t-5 out of mustang with a higher gear set. its the kit that sells in the svo book. i don't remember what first gear is, i think 2.97. the kit makes it have the same gearing as a tremmec. it also has the upgrade output staft and upgrade world class t-5 parts. we also boxin the clutch fork.
