Another project I'm looking forward to watch. I'm glad you have the truck in hand (or at least in your driveway )

Instead, i pulled the engine. Determined to find the problem is was a late night..
First, this engines been rebuilt. Who ever put it together wasn't paying attention and used the wrong carb spacer to manifold gasket which led to a massive vacuum leak.
And what's a big vacuum leak going to cause?? A lean condition, which will lead to burnt valves. This had obviously been driven like this for a long time. I'll just show one of my favorite pics-
OK, here's one more. Both valves are sunk about 1/8" into the head.
The cylinders don't look to bad. There are still hone marks in most. It's still std. bore. Pistons are tight. Two of the holes have a ridge I can feel but I'm not going to get into the bottom end. It still had about 25lbds of oil pressure. I've got three other blocks that I could do when the time is right and there's more funding.
So as it is now, I've got my parts list of gaskets, upper/lower hoses, belts, t-stat. I've got another set of heads that have 10,000 miles on them. Just going to lap the valves and use them. Have all the parts that came off that 10,000 engine which I'll be using like the fuel pump, water pump, P/S pump all of which were new on that engine.
So a budget rebuild for under $200 and were good to go..

That's funny in a sad kind of way. You'd think they would have figured it out long ago. Rattle can rebuild?
Interesting body buck tag on your firewall. Never seen one of those on these trucks...

That's great that you got it all figured out so quickly. My first FE, a 390 in a 69 Galaxie, had a valve burnt just like that one. One has to wonder how a person can have the knowledge to rebuild an engine but have a vacuum leak like that and never notice it.

re: 72 Ranger XLT C/S from cali..
a little more cleaning of the short block revealed .060 over and a sleeve in #1.. Still going to put it back together as a budget rebuild but.. I've got another block that's still std, and a mirror 105 block that's .030 over. Thinging of using that for the shorty and going with a stroker crank.
This trucks going to stay stock.. Maybe over the winter I'll get the other std block done and swap it in in the spring....
To many options...
