install of clutch and tranny

Post by peanutman »

Going to install fly wheel, clutch, bellhousing, tranny this weekend. Never installed a clutch by myself. All how to books are fairly vague. Any advise to make this a easy task. :? Going back w/all new parts. Questions are like how do you inguage clutch to hook adjustment rod back up. :? Can someone give me a rundown or good link. :D Thanks!

Setting up the clutch is pretty easy Robbie.

In yer clutch kit you should have gotten a clutch plate centering tool.
If not, you'll need to get one.
It holds the clutch in place while you tighten the P. plate bolts to recommended specs.
With the P. plate bolted down, stab the tranny, it's alot easier if you have a good tranny jack.
Reinstall the tranny crossmember, Z-bar and mounts.

With the spring(S) disconnected, tighten or loosen the adjusting bar (attached to the Z-bar) so that the pointed end is about 1/8 from touching the clutch lever.
You want the clutch lever set so the throwout bearing is just making contact with the clutch fingers or diaphram (depending on the type of P.Plate you have).
That should give you the proper clutch free play...

Put the inspection cover on and hook up the spring, hook up the speedo cable, and install the driveline.

I think that's everything... I just did it in my '68 CS a couple of months ago
It's really not to bad of a job...

You might need to fine adjust the rod once you drive it a little.

Thanks kap that sounds simple enough, i do have a line tool and tranny jack. Some of the books was talking about using a block of wood for something that i never did understand. My bell and tranny is cast iron- heavy suckers. Replacing u-joints too, i have a full weekend ahead.

Hey PM...

They might be wanting you to put a piece of wood under the tranny to stabilize it on the jack.
I have seen times when the tranny doesn't sit very well on the jack which could cause some safety issues should it shift and slide off the jack.

Get 4 long bolts that fit the bell. Cut the heads off the bolts. Screw them in to the bell finger tight. When you stab the trans, the bolts will guide it in straight. Makes the job a lot easier! Avoid dropping the trans on body parts! Good luck,
