69 transmission

Post by jay1213 »

I have a 69 f100 styleside 2wd with a 360 and a 3spd that has a floor shifter that was installed by the prvious owner. I'm looking 4 a 4spd transmission that will bolt right in with little or no modifications. My question is what will bolt in I have been looking at a np435 but any 4spd will work. I have access 2 any tool in the book and I live near about 7 junk yards. I need HELP stat.

the htree speeds and four speeds all used the same four bolt bellhousing bolt pattern in our trucks. np 435 should work fine. the onlt thing you might have to do is wire in the reverse light switch on the side of the np435. originally the 3 speed had that switch on the bottom of the column in the engine compartment.

Reverse lights are already wired 2 a switch in the cab so that's not a problem. My problem is what I can find this tranni or a comparable 1 out of at the yard?

You will need to change the floor hump to use the 435 or T18 and you aren't gaining anything but a super low 1st that you will rarely use. Depending on how heavy your foot is, I would look into one of those 3+od cast iron toploaders. They aren't going to hold up to serious horsepower and bang shifting but should work out just fine behind a sensibly driven stock 360.

I have done a lot of research on this and no were have I seen that you have 2 change the "hump" aka transmission tunnel. Anybody care 2 shed some light, I was under the assumption that the transmission tunnel was only larger in 4whl drives?

You need to change the floor hump & the short (front) drive shaft in order to run a 4 speed tranny. The floor hump because the 4 speed is a top-loader. The 3 speed has linkage on the side of the box. & the drive shaft because it is a different lenght than the 3 speed. If you live near 7 junk yards you should be looking for a FE bump/dent truck equipped with the NP435. Get the floor hump & the short shaft out of it.

Trucks with the 3 speed or C4 auto had the low hump. You won't fit a 4 speed under it.

the only way to make it fit if its the low hump is to cut the floor out carefully where the factory would have.

I remember Keith talking about some low humps having the bolt in and some not? Maybe I am remembering wrong. I bet he has a write on it somewhere. I have even heard the C6 needs more clearance than the 3 speed, can't verify that.
Why do you want granny tranny? What will you gain? I guess if you need a creeper gear. I have just driven them my whole life and see them as basically a clunky shifting 3 speed with a good park. Yes they are tough, no doubt. I would be looking for at T85N or the aforementioned OD toploader, something with overdrive and more usable gears.

yes the factory 3 speed trucks had a low hump. the c6 and the rest of the floor shift models all had a hihg hump removeable tunnel / hump cover to give more room and a place for the shifter to go through the floor. removing the cover for a clutch replacement is a good thing to have. the dentside trucks all had high humps. but not all of them were removeable. heres a pic of one of the two automatic removeable humps i have.
