Disc Brake rearend swap???

Post by fitzwell »

So, in my travels , i have come across a couple of disc brake rearends, just wondering if anyone on here has done this swap. According to the I.D. Tag, these are 95-01 Explorer/mountaineer units. Preliminary (eyeball) inspection tells me that these would damn near be a bolt in unit. Minor swap issues as usual, but no major hurdles that I can forsee.

If anyone on here has any ideas, thoughts, comments, i'd love to hear 'em.

Sorry, I have no idea, but it sounds like a good idea. Even if it's just for the cool factor. :)

the only things that could be needed to be done or thought about would; be total width, perch width, lug pattern. the lug pattern would be the harest to deal with, i wouldn't want to have a truck with two different lug patterns for front and back. the rest would be easy.

e-brake may be a pain if you cant live without it. i dont know. also if it has traction control. im pretty sure if you just leave it unhooked it would work fine and have trac-loc. that or it woulnt have trac-loc at all. i dunno. just some thoughts. if your looking for a rear end keep an eye out for a limited slip unit. i know our 97 xploder has limited slip. it may be easy to come across.

if you are wanting to do a disc rear,i would just buy a kit.i have used the kit from b c broncos. its a good kit and for the money i think it s worth it.
you still us your housing so no swaping perches or shouck mounts, the lug pattern would be my biggest consern on using the explore one :2cents:

Grab the rear with the whole disc brake set-up from a Lincoln. I believe marz68 used one in his truck. The bolt pattern won't be the 5 on 5.5 anymore though, but it will match the front if you do a Mustang II swap.

Upon further review....

the spring pearches mount the rear on TOP of the springs. Bonus...i drop the truck almost 5". Downside...C notch the frame to make everything clear. Will have to check the bolt pattern, but yeah, two bolt patterns aint gonna cut it. Ebrake cables are with the rear, doesn't appear adapting them to my intermediate cable will be too big of a chore. The code translates to a 3.73 non lock gear. once i get the overdrive in, no worries, but in the beginning, a c-6 and 28" tall tires ought to make for some interesting adventures :)

Check ClassicBroncos.com for 'Explorer Disk Brake Swap'

The Early bronco guys like it because of the ease of implementation and the E-brake works well.

They use the same 9" we have... a bit narrower, but the info is the same.

If you want to use the whole axle, that isn't a bad way to go... the 8.8 in those had 31 spline axles and is fairly stout.

Does anyone out there have a kit for the 9" rear that will have the correct bolt pattern?

B.C.Bronco uses, I believe, a Jeep Cherokee rotor and a Caddy calipers. for the 9 inch. Goto their site look up brakes on the side click on rear brakes

(from b.c.'s website)

ROTORS: 80-86 Jeep CJ-7 front (NOTE: The center hole of the rotors will need to be enlarged if using stock axles)
CALIPERS: 79-85 Cadillac Seville Rear.

Master power has a rear disc kit with the correct bolt pattern. I used their front disc kit, it is pretty good (pricey though)
