Question about clutch/flywheel

Post by RTG_RACING »

I have a 70's 351w. What type of clutch and flywheel do I need to convert from auto to manual? DO I use a 10" 10.5" or 11" and DIA or B&B style clutch? Also what type of balance should I get Nutral 28oz or 50oz? Thanks

Balance on the correct flywheel will be 28oz. Flywheel can have 157 or 164 teeth depending on tranny and bellhousing that you use. Clutch will depend on the flywheel you use. So, figure out what tranny you're going to run and work backwards from there.

Bellhousings for that tranny come in either flywheel size. Any idea which one you're using? If it's got a part number on it, you can search the net to find out.

Generally the bigger bellhousing/flywheel setup is found in the trucks. Also can probably be found in cars with 351W. Or if you're going to use a scattershield, they're often set up for either flywheel.

I thought that was just the FE bellhousings. The trans I have is out of a 68 fastback with a 289 wide ratio 1st. So what bellhousing sohuld i get? 6 or 6.5?

I would use the biggest flywheel that will fit your bellhousing. And for the clutch I would use the old Ford three finger style. My buddy had a diaphragm clutch in his 4spd 66 Mustang and when you wound it up tight the clutch pedal would stick to the floor. He changed to the three finger and never had the problem again. I personally have had good luck with Advance Auto clutches called Brute Force, they are made by Zoom I think. Hope this helps.Brian. :2cents:
