looks good so far...keep up the good work and keep posting those pics!!!
What engine/trans are you planning on running? I have been thinking about the crown vic swap as well and keep going back and forth between wanting to run my current 302 or use the motor mounts from the new crossmember and running a modular 2V motor.

Re: 72 F100 project, long bed to short bed conversion
I did the GM truck frame graft, and after wrapping it up heard about the CV, I think the CV is better, but too late for me on this project anyway, I'm running a 2V mod motor in the GM chassis, I think what you'll discover is; if the cross-member has motor mounts they may be too far forward or backward to use in the truck, however if you're considering the CV suspension then you're talented enough to use either engine, and make the appropriate mounts.marvin2 wrote:looks good so far...keep up the good work and keep posting those pics!!!

Re: 72 F100 project, long bed to short bed conversion
I've been all over the map over what engine I really want but for now I'll throw the 360 back in there. I've thought about a stroker FE, a 460 or stroker, 4.6 or 5.4 3V or even a 5.4L Lightning swap. I've also got a 351W I've been saving for another project that i could use. It just depends on $$$marvin2 wrote:looks good so far...keep up the good work and keep posting those pics!!!

Re: 72 F100 project, long bed to short bed conversion
A little update on the CV crossmember swap, I've got the holes drilled and suspension mocked up. I had pieces of 1/4" and 3/16" scrap I was going to weld together and make spacers for the top of the frame but I'm going see if I can find some 5/8" material somewhere. Also need to make the trailing arm brackets and box in the frame.
I'm debating on whether or not to cut the 94+ mustang joint and simply use the DD portion of the steering shaft. I can order the ujoint and shaft from summit or jegs but I might go look and see what I can find at the junkyard, not too crazy about the steering column either as its a column shift but welded up a long time ago. Its got a floor mounted shifter now.

Re: 72 F100 project, long bed to short bed conversion (+CV Swap)
I've been chipping away on the CV swap little by little....
I made some brackets for the trailing arms.
Boxed in the frame...
Brushed on some POR15...
Put in down on all fours again... and yes those are ET streets on the front from my other car. I've been wheel shopping but I need to get
the sheetmetal back on to see how much offset is required. Thinking of 20s all around or maybe a 22/20 combo

Re: 72 F100 project, long bed to short bed conversion
so on the rack n pinion the gearbox is built into the cv's sunspension? or atleas part of the rack itself and bolted to the crossmember?
sorry for this question but never paid much attention to rack n pinion, thought it was just a fancy word for a chevies' steering gear box.
other question, will the cv front and rear accept a rotor designed for the 5x5.5 bolt pattern?

Your project is coming along great man! I am so stoked to try this CV swap myself. Any idea how much drop you gained in doing the swap up front?

Re: 72 F100 project, long bed to short bed conversion
Yes the rack and pinion replaces the steering box and all the arms, center link, etc. I didnt look into it but I'm sure you could retrofit a rack and pinion in a stock i-beam suspension. The crown-vic is 5x4.5 and I doubt it could accept a 5.5 truck rotor, maybe it could be redrilled to 5x5.5?? I dont know... but there are a lot more wheel choices with the 5x4.5.rjewkes wrote:so on the rack n pinion the gearbox is built into the cv's sunspension? or atleas part of the rack itself and bolted to the crossmember?

I dont know for sure but its definitely got a rake to it now... I plan on cutting a coil or two after I get the engine back in there.marvin2 wrote:Your project is coming along great man! I am so stoked to try this CV swap myself. Any idea how much drop you gained in doing the swap up front?

Re: 72 F100 project, longbed to short conv. (+hydroboost)
Excellent work JG....
Looks like I will be doing a hydroboost setup as well. What are you doing about a proportioning vavle? Are you planning on running disc brakes in the rear as well?
I can't thank you enough for all the detailed pictures and write-ups. As soon as I get a garage, I am going to blow my truck apart and get started doing the same stuff.

I'm going to try running without a p-valve and probably get an explorer rear-end w/disc .marvin2 wrote:Excellent work JG....
