Rustoleum paint job

About the body work, yeah, just like I said above, half of my poor body work is because I didn't take it down to metal. The other half is not using a high build primer and then blocking it smooth. If this wasn't my daily driver I would have done those two things and it would have been perfect.

The reason I went with rustoleum is for the ease of touch ups and for the price. I had pretty much everything I needed except for paint. So it was a pretty easy choice. Either go with rustoleum for less than $200 or go all out and spend $1k on the good stuff. The good stuff is nice but when I see a really perfect BC/CC job on an old truck, I kind of don't get it. I use my truck as a truck and I'm rough with it. I wanted something clean and easy to keep up with. If I rub the side of the truck with something I will be able to rough it up with some 400 grit and spray on a couple of coats and buff it out. No big deal. It takes a good bit of time to fix a BC/CC job.

After seeing it in the final stages, I feel pretty good about using it on my next project.

Also, a really shiney BC/CC job looks sort of wrong on a classic. I know I'm in the minority but a rustoleum paint job looks more original to me. I feel the same way about other classics. They just don't look right to me in BC/CC.

One question, Do you see any reason a rustoleum paint with metalic couldn't be sprayed??? The "roller" guys say metalic paint can't be used but I don't see why it can't be sprayed..

First off, the truck is looking great man...good job and thanks for the write up and pics!

Got some questions:
1. There still seems to be some gloss with the rustoleum paint (obviously not as much as with a bc/cc). Does this gloss just ware off with time? What if you kept it waxed?

2. You mentioned you were running a 220v compressor, but what size is it....how many gallons?

Rustoleum is a single stage paint and not any different (in the way it goes on) than other single stage paints. If paint manufactures sell single stage paint that is metalic, then I can't see why you can't add metalic flakes to rustoleum. I would buy a small sample of the metalic flakes, mix it with a quart of rustoleum and spray and old hood to see how it looks.

It is just plain old generic rustoleum. Same stuff you get a home depot or Ace hardware.

Small update.

I wasn't able to put another coat of paint on due to rain but I have knocked down the small run with 360 grit wet and then did a light sanding with 400 grit wet all over the truck. I had some small dust nibs and a couple of moths flew into it. The 400 grit really smoothed stuff out without taking off too much paint. 600 grit would have probably been better but I didn't have any and I'm not spending another penny!

We will see how it looks after the next coat and I might stop there. I want to make sure I have enough paint on the truck so I can lightly sand it with 1500 or 2000 grit wet paper and then buff it out.

I'm hoping I will be able to put on another coat today after work (6:45 ish).

Well today after work, I put on the final coat. It looks good so I'm going to leave it at that. I did get a couple of runs again, but I will carefully sand them out and buff it up.

I'm going to wet sand with 2000 grit and try some buffing this week. I will get some pictures up if it buffs out nice.

Then I will start assembly.
