My 1970 Crew Cab

Well I have had the Truck since December. I have been held back from doing any real work on it for a number of reasons. Lack of funds after driving from Austin to LA and back for the extra cab. Lack of space to work on it. Moving. Being to hot to be outside. Anyway, I got rid of my 69 and am going to devote my time to the crew. I believe I have deciphered the VIN tag correctly but if I made a mistake feel free to let me know.

It's a pretty good start. The cab that is on it has some rot in the drip rail and the floor board has a few patches that were just slapped in it. It's just an old west Texas farm truck. I know the transmission has been replaced in it because it has an automatic in it. It also has power disk brakes up front. It runs pretty good too. I think I need to rebuild the carb though. Seems to have a dead spot in it but it's been getting better the more I drive it. I also need to flush the radiator and change out the thermostat. I drove it the other day and it started overheating on me. I let it sit for a few days and filled it back up with water and drove it home with no problems. It does 70 down the interstate just fine. I think it is a little to low geared for what I want so I am thinking about changing them out to a more highway friendly gear ratio.

Well I have a few more pics here. Over the weekend I needed to clean up my garage so I took one of the seats out of my extra cab and bolted in the back of the cab I have on there. While I had the camera I took pictures of the 1987 seat I put in a few months ago along with the blue door panels in the front.




Here are the bucket seats off of the garage floor and in what will eventually be their home.





Here is what I hope is the worst rust on the cab. I know there is some in the drip rail but not nearly as much as the cab that is on there now.



That's it for now. I know they are little changes but it looks better to me. Also the wife came out and helped me clean off and install the seat. It is blue now but was a nice shade of gray before

I do miss that truck but it would still be sitting in that same spot on my driveway if I hadn't sold it. I miss those bucket seats more!

I wouldn't change the gears in that big dana 70! If I remember right they were some 3.70s (or something close to it). When I drove it down from Gilmer, I got 12.5 mpg the whole way. I don't think you are going to do much better than that with a crewcab and 360. Of course I think I kept it to about 60mph, so.....

Yeah, I love this truck. Eventually I am going to put a 351W with either a c4 or a c6, hopefully the c6. Then I will see how the truck drives then. If I still have problems then I may swap a half ton drivetrain in it. I love the bucket seats. I can get some other buckets out of a mustang so I was thinking about front and rear buckets. Possibly a cab length center console with speakers, drink holders and AC vents and storage but we will see. That is a long way off though. Anyone near Austin know how to do bodywork??

Ryan, if you talk to my brother you may be able to get this cab off of him It was his payment for driving out to CA with me to pick it up. But fair warning, it is rough. I will get pics of it from underneath and of the drip rail bubbling.

Well this is one of the problems with the truck that has been bothering me since I got it. The front wheels are not centered in the wheel wells on the front fenders. Is there any way to adjust this aside from loosening the body mount bolts and shifting the cab forward?







When I first got it it would be close to the front of one fender but not on the other. Then I would drive it and it would be worse on the other side. I haven't noticed it doing that for the last few months though. Any and all is appreciated.

is it two or four wheel drive? i know on the 4x4's if the front suspension gets loose namely the u bolts and the plates they hold everything together with get loose it'll move on you. is the body loose anywhere how are the Radius arm bushings?

Mine is a 2 wheel drive. I probably could use new bushings but I don't think they are to that worn out yet. How should I check them? Lift the front end and see how much play they have if any?

Your front wheels seem to be setting just like mine do on my '70 CS 2wd. I have all new everything in my front end and that is exactly like mine. Closer to the front of the wheel well. Mine drives fine, so I don't find it to be a problem for them to be slightly forward of the center of the wheel well.

Now, regarding this crew of yours, hurry up......fixit, fixit, fixit, it will be a GREAT one! I have a '69 F-350 Contractor Special, (with Onan under the hood), 2 wd Crew Cab that is now starting to get my attention. Has 165 inch wheel base with an 8 ft. Styleside bed. It came with a 390 and power disc brakes, but no power steering. Guess that is because of the Onan takes almost all the room on the left side of the engine leaving no place for a power steering pump. At least that seems to be the problem. I've got to figure out how to fit one in. My 1970 High Boy Crew Cab is factory 4X4 without power steering, and that is just plain miserable to try to parallel park! Power Steering has become an obsession to me for BOTH of these trucks! Maybe by summer this will all be changed. Everybody needs to have a Crew Cab!!

I love mine, I wish mine was a long bed though, and a 4x4. I have an Onan Generator inner fender I was going to sell but I think it will cost to much to ship it to the guy that wants it.

I would say the radius arm bushings, or something could be bent on one side? When I took mine apart I found the passenger fender was pushed in slightly in the front from an accident at one time... also the frame horns are bent so next step for me is take it to a frame shop to get the front horns straightened out (I need them straight to put the front leaf spring crossmember/hangers on )
