I have doubts too Robroy, but it's almost impossible to tell without seeing in person. If it makes you feel any better, your pain will help me with my oil pan selection in the future.

Yeah! Thankfully I'll be there in person tomorrow morning to check it out. I have a fantasy about having #50 at home one day, and just walking out in the yard whenever I want to check things out. I like the idea of this special "off road" oil pan, and I like the large eight quart capacity. Hopefully it will work out!

Well, the oil pan hits the steering after all! I'm glad I discovered this now instead of after the truck was put all together. I started a tech thread on this issue here: http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... &sk=t&sd=a.
I wanted a separate thread to track that issue since it will have greater visibility in the engine area than it will being tucked away in this project updates thread.

wonder what happens if miloddon has a 5-6 qt capacity pan that won't hit the steering? heck it might even make the trans clearance with the cab problem go away too. if the big idea of the rear sump is ease/cleanliness of oil changes and higher cappacity, wat about an 5-8 qt front sump with a drain plug in front of the cross member?
what about a stock oil pan with a new drain valve/plug in front of the crossmember? like the kits for putting a drain hole/plug in the transmission pan?

Well, at this point I feel it would be best to pull the trany and bellhousing back off and drop the motor down onto the mounts to see if the pan hits the steering. You may or may not be ok with the new mounts. Is good old Steve going to buy you the correct pan for your application if this one doesn't fit? Not returnable once installed (been there). The oil filter works the same no matter how it's mounted, they all have a spring loaded flap so once the filter clogs it'll still flow oil and they also have a check valve to keep the oil from draining back into the oil pan. If you lifters tap on startup usually the checkvalve isn't working in the filter. Fram was notorious for this becasue they used a cardboard flap, Ford filers use a rubber flap that works much better.

I had the same problem on my '68 F100, with a car 390. The filter would impact the cross member. Went to my favorite auto parts tore and the old guy behind the counter said "You need a 3/4 quart Dodge filter. Same threads, but a little shorter."
Ran one of those filters until I parked the truck for good. (It's my bump trailer, now!)
Some filters that will fit are: Purolator L-20081, AC PF20, Wix 51068, Fram PH43, NAPA 1068, Chrysler 3549957, and Hastings LF196.

Hey Jamie! You know, the pan that's on there today isn't even supposed to fit; Milodon says on their site that it's only for 4x4's and vans. So I don't think there's any mystery there. Yes he is! Steve said that I should e-mail him with whatever pan/pickup/tray I want and he'll buy it and have it all shipped right to me. Then I can return the existing pan to him once I've received the new parts. Flyboy2610, thank you for all those part numbers! I'll probably go the same way you went on this and get one of these other filters. Probably the Wix 51068. Yes it's nice looking now--but wait and see how it will look after 30,000 miles, or 50,000 miles. I probably won't be spending too much time under the hood keeping it immaculate, if that were even possible to do.
