71 f250 390 ultimate work truck progress report.
ok i will be cronicling my transformation of my f250 into the ultimate work truck. this build will not be budget friendly or labor light. the money is not an issue since it is a money making truck. if i build the equivalant of a 50k modern truck and use only 40k i am still ahead of the game right? 2k for truck + parts most of the labor will be mine any way.
stated goals: make me money $$$ and last 40 more years.
responcibilities: get crap to job from job haul work and dunnage trailers *to be constructed later* haul most general carpentry and concrete personal owned and some company tools to the jobs.
mods to be done.
rebuild 390 to like new.
np 435 tranny install <------<<< found site checking into adapting muncie to fe engine
dana 70 rear end
air load springs. <---------<<< rear end only
pto *dunno something* air / power/ hydrualics
lift gate or crane.
get 33x 12.50 tires on the front. <-----<<< done 1 ton springs added 5 inches of lift for tires *yeehaw*
personalize sound dynamics of sound system
get locker for rear end *prolly arb air*
paint *color to be determined thinking orange and green* <----<<< wife and kids vetoed it now will be mighnight blue *ordarker * with black explore strip white roof
running boards <----<<< will be self fabricated when i get a welder
window tint fix <----<<< removing any day will not replace
new tool boxes. *got them on layaway so to speak *
work lights *mabey deffinetly rear facing "work lights" for ahem "accidentally" hitting when highbeams are behind me *
f 600 instrument panel with guages for every thing.
Limitations: as close to stock as pratical with as little suspension lift as possible.
pictures check here for pics of updates:

Re: 71 f250 390 ultimate work truck progress report.
got my distributor cap replaced rotor condenser and point set all replaced. new power didn't know she had it in her
carb tuned proper for new spark. need to replace lead from coil to distributor 5 splices YIKES!!
got new power steering hoses on that sucked but done no more gallons of fluid on the road.
need to redo the timing it is off it was waaay off before wife got called in to work early had to get her out the door.
found out my distributer is a tooth off always had been oh well more to do .
ordered spring spacer for front coils should lift 2 inches get the fender outa the way of those 33's if not back to original plan of cutting fender and moving wheel opeing forward 1 1/2 inches then fabing in new peice. if i have to go that route i will post pics of it for posterity.
still one dude that i finally can roll up my sleeves on this truck and fix all the crap wrong with it.

Carpenter, this sounds cool. I wanna get a couple of 350's and 650's to build Tow trucks out of, lots of people say no cuase the newer is better, but then i see all kinds of 70's and 80's in use as tow trucks around here all the time. never got more than 5mpgs in the 96 chevy 3500 or 10 in the f650 rollback wich was an '05.

yeah i checked into that and way too much money especially for just a few inches and stifness nope i will just use a coil spacer and air bag insert then when i am drifing around town pssssss..... soft springs. once i hit the dirt pssssss.... stiff the hight change will be with in the acceptable range for a local shop to not charge extra for the ibeam bend. once i get the front set up the next step is to find rear springs with enough lift to give me back my ford rake then use rear bags to stiffen when running loaded all of this tops the bill at about 600 if i keep my rear springs mabey 1k if i get new springs vs. the 1 k just to do the front with no option of softer ride so i opted out. this is a work truck so i will be about 50 /50 on off road. and the truck should in the end come out with the "i know something is different but i can't put my foot on it look instead of nice lift dude." and keep them tires filling up the fender.

hell yeah rj your right i am damn tired of this "newer is better ****" people look at you like you stupid or just to be pitied since you drive an old car hell i am finantially responceable why drop thousands of dollars for a vehicle with and experation date? when we can rebuild these ones for little to nothing once they are finished that is. and mpgs bah my truck when i bought it in reasonably good shape with me driving *miss daisy* got 15 mpg average. hell that is better than the new nissan titans out at the time i know that is not fair since i was comparing my 3/4 ton truck to a half ton one of course it has the huge disadvantage of less weight and modern engine technology and of course all that wind tunnle testing i was bound to wait.... I BEAT IT IN MILAGE..... damn kinda feel bad for them now. kinda like being out run by a dude on cruches huh?

No i agree Newer isn't always better, i had 2 week down times on the '05 and '07 F650 wreckers and they alternated, as soon as one came back the other would go down, always for the same electrical issues unless it was down due to the speedo not working the shifter not working or whene the 6 cylinder cummins decided to drop the lifter pumps.

i got my spring spacers today happy day. did a little dance will update when they are in. crossing fingers that the lift will clear tire and the fender so i dont' have to cut or order a new baja fender just to get descent tires on here.

Re: 71 f250 390 ultimate work truck progress report.
ok for the last couple of months i had dental and sholder med bills to pay. then the wife went and bought herself *on my advice* a 47 chrysler windsor with *suicide doors and highlander trim. it is a total rust bucket right now. so much surface rust i am tempted to use it to make thermite haha.
but back to the topic of the thread. i finally got a day to work on the truck. so i .....
went out in the cool of the morning and put in the new wireing looms for the spark plug now no more hearing the wire whine about "he's touching meeee...." good by angry octopuss hello visually unappealing but routed wires.
i decided to fix my craptastic fuel line flare from when i replaced my fuel line. i then had to fix like three more leaks but now it runs dry.
i saw at a carshow *midnight at the oasis* a bumpside with a chain going from a bolt on the drivers side exhaust manifold to the bolt on the top of the drivers side engine mount. i asked the guy by the truck if this solved the W.O.T. problem on his fe engine... he replied "duno it's my sisters truck." cool huh? any way i dicided to try it seemed like a good idea and turns out it was i need to change where i put my though but it worked.
i then went to work on the wire that runs from my distributer to the ignition coil. mine had like 5 splices on it so no needed new and it got it. the result from that was my point gap is now off but, still runs. which was good since i had promised to pick up my little one from kindergarden in it that day.
after picking up the monkey. i got to work putting in the fuel filter yaay i now have a fuel filter again. about 3 years ago after i had the shite work done on replaceing my tranny i hit a bump on the way home from some concrete work *diging , rod busting* on a 115 degreeday. and heard some bad news. me and a co worker jumped under it on the hot assfault and saw that the driver side exhaust had poped off of the hanger and that the hanger it's self had been busted for a while. so we looked at each other stood up grabbed our tie wire and hung it back up *gave off a very bad rattle ever sence* and the falling had busted my exhaust loose at the collecter so now i had a noisy smelly leak. 3 years of lots of work and little money latter i got to work on it. the whole damn thing was welded solid from the collecter to the tip. i droped it all put on new gasket reseated the damn thing put on the new hanger. more bailing wire *done better this time* and now i can hear my engine in front and exhaust out back
now my truck
runs better. waay better i think i even picked up a few mpg i will test this latter.
doesn't have the *this truck is about to die sounding rattle*
and has a deep resonating exhaust rumble like a big block should
with the ball and armrest it is waay waaaay more comfy to drive than it was before.
now i just need to
finish the bondo on the door *damage from improper mirror installs*
strip paint and unwanted trim and a little bit of surface rust *improper lumber rack*
bondo holes from trim
decide what color to paint after the white primer is done.
decide on interior colors.
sorry for the long post just how my life seems to be all at once or not at all.

Re: 71 f250 390 ultimate work truck progress report.
all right been dormate for the hot season i love my truck but standing in the sun on 110+ days isn't so much fun and laying down on the ground that is the same temperature isn't much more fun. but.....
IT IS REACHING THE END OF THE HOT SEASON YAAAY. and to comemerate the loss of the hotest part of the year i went out fixed the green spot on the door by sanding out the irregularities and using some "high build filler primer" now my body work looks actually pretty good. oh and i put on a matching driver side rearview mirror. so now i am street legal again. and less cop atractive. man i think with that big green spot and no mirror and old tore up license plate my truck must have smelled like doughnuts.
so any way yeah no real work done on it but alot of mileage outa what did get done. and more is to come cuz wrench season is upon us here in the valley.
