found this over at Pirate's site. looks interesting, and at the mentioned E-Pay price of $550, it seems comparable and might pay for itself in savings on fuel.

I would prefer to use Acetylene and oxygen rather then gasoline.

So I shouldn't be using acetylene and oxygen in my cutting torch then?

At the last place I worked at I was told that the acetylene was a hotter gas and worked better than propane.

sounds pretty convincing- cost wise on gas - acy cut's ok- it is high and i guess you could use any lp bottle

i'm gonna look for more info on the gasoline rig - the main thing i see is the cost of a new cutting rig vrs. how much it's used

propane has a cooler temp, but for the home fab'er, it should work fine. lots less soot, cleaner cuts, and being able to steal the B-B-Q's tank when your torch runs out during a late saturday fab session? priceless!

Actually, nothing is better than acetylene imho, its the hottest burning gas used in welding , provides better cuts on thicker plate, i mean sure it has its drawbacks, but, it also takes less time to preheat the metal to kendeling temperature to start the cut, if its worked so well for so long, why change now?

I have used oxy/gasoline before. It is used in rescue type enviornments because of its supply of fuel and it can cut through up to 13" thick steel. It is a lot more tempermental to work with the acetylene since it constantly needs primed and takes about a min. to get buring well. The flame starts to fizzle out after a couple of min. and you have to go prime the gas can up again.

thats the reason id rather use acetylene, NO PRIMING, just heat, and cut

i didnt read this post before. but i can tell you from experience that propane sucks for using as a cutting torch. i couldn't use it at all. my brother in law uses it. but i couldn't get his setup to work. it was taking too long to even heat up the metal before i could even think about doing a quick cut on something.

Have used propane for a huge rosebud head ,worked well but from the size difference between propane to acetylene I think you would over sized cutting tip high fuel PSI to work.
Huge difference in energy content between the two I think
No one mentioned if they are using a propane tip there is a difference in "jetting " in the two and usually a bigger regulator for propane

try one that has been cleaned so much it is no good for acetylene
that will be closer...but still a bit small
