Opinions wanted 460 engine
I have been saving for a power plant for the 67 and recently browsed this 460 for sale on CL in Austin: http://austin.craigslist.org/pts/1626221470.html
It looks like a pretty good setup to me when you include everything.
What I like: It sounds to me like a good deal, will likely be a good performer, close proximity.
What I don't like: no warranty, still has some work to do on it.
What I don't know: Who did the work, what kind of trans its set up for (if at all), and what year of 460 it is (emissions and trans fitment)
I have not contacted the person yet because I wanted to get some opinions first to see if it is worth pursuing. Let me know what you all think, TIA! Bill

Re: Opinions wanted 460 engine
Your unknowns are all questions that I would ask. I would want to see it, and maybe even here it run first. It would suck to get it all the way home and the be something jacked up inside it. But that will probably be a gamble with any motor unless you pay for a warranty.

Looks like 3 grand for a motor that's still all in pieces. And no carb or intake. Sounds like decent parts. You just have to hope that whoever did the work did a good job.

Re: Opinions wanted 460 engine
Could be work done by some of the best in the world, and could be some of the best stock parts in the world to build from, but for that kind of money, I'd prefer to buy a good buildable core and build it "my way".
If it seems the parts are along the lines of what you're looking to have, I'd ask for machinist's name and contact info, and then I'd check them out. From there it comes down to checking the parts yourself, or paying a shop to if the seller agrees.

I would rather get a 460 and do the work myself. Honestly I don't see where the prices he has listed are good. It seems he is wanting full price for a bunch of parts

Re: Opinions wanted 460 engine
Thanks for the replies all. I think the prices seem a bit high too, I was thinking of offering $2500 for the whole thing to include the engine stand and crane. The value thing is what I was concerned about the most. If it required some work, that wouldn't bother me. My thoughts are if I by a turn key motor it will be more expensive and having one rebuilt will be more expensive too. I don't have the skills to do the work myself and honestly have a good motor.

Dove-C's are good heads, but the D3's can be just as good on the street. Look at the cost of building your own, with parts and machine work from someone YOU know of. You may even be able to build a stroker 521 for not much more. (hope I dont step on anyone's toes here.. ) but check out 460ford.com and see what they are doing with costs.. Good Luck

Re: Opinions wanted 460 engine
For what it's worth, I bought an entire truck for $1100 for the 460 and c6 to put in my 68. It was built by a Ford mechanic who was going to tow with it, but then ended up getting a newer diesel that came in on trade at his dealership.
I drove the truck as is for over a year before I pulled the engine/trans to put in my 68.

Seams to me I duplicated that engine in my ranchito for less than $2500 including buying a dove 429 and a 68 460 because the 70 block was cracked.

Re: Opinions wanted 460 engine
How much work did you do with building it? I will have to leave the lower end assembly and head work to the pros. I am just not that knowledgeable and afraid I will mess something up. Finally assembly stuff I can do, like putting the heads, intake, carb, etc. on and installing the motor. But doing the intricate work with bearings and torque specs is beyond my expertise and I am likely to mess something up.averagef250 wrote:Seams to me I duplicated that engine in my ranchito for less than $2500 including buying a dove 429 and a 68 460 because the 70 block was cracked.

Re: Opinions wanted 460 engine
It is a good thing I waited, I saw this one a couple of weeks ago and they where asking $2200, now they are down to $1900. I may call and ask about it now.

Re: Opinions wanted 460 engine
I would look for a complete motor and build it how you want. I got real lucky and got my 460 and C6 together for under $300.
Ill wager a guess at having close to $3000 in the motor build. Including things like radiator etc.

Most machine shops have a engine builder the will assumble the short block for you, if you didnt feel comfortable doing it yourself.
