Keith is it possible to have a truck like this

Post by FLASH 1 »

here is how it goes,, back in December we bought a 72 from somebody in Az. that was his granpa's truck and here is the usuall specs, 390, Automatic, Power Steering, A/C, AM/FM BUT with a twist,,, Truck has Power Disc Brakes with the non vented rotors which means pre 74,, and by the looks like its been under there for many years,,, and the next twist, not a 9" but a 9 3/4 with a 3:L50 center 31 axle spline,, after taking many apart over 100 67-72's have found a few 70/72 with 31 spline open 9" rears but first one like this anyway just curious on how many others have seen this or is this myth or real :hmm:

I've seen lots of F-100's with 60 rears and had one 70 F-100 with a 31 spline 9 inch original. I have never seen disc brakes on a bump F-100 though, that ones new to me. You got a really unique truck right there. Might be some sort of Ford test truck for disc brakes?

I've been told by a couple people that some of the very last 72's built came with front disc brakes. One guy who lives not far from me joined here long enough to sell the remains of his 72 short wide. He still had the rolling chassis when I went to his house to buy some parts. It had discs with non vented rotors that he swore were original. I goofed, didn't take a camera and by the time I went back he had sold the chassis. :hw:

My '72 shorty has a 9-3/8", 31 spline, 3l50:1, 3600#, flexo rear end in it. No discs up front.......yet, though.

that is suppose to be the story. some of the late 72 F100's could have or did get disc brakes. possibly a early 73 change over period where they just started usign the parts early.

Just have to look at vin #to see how close to the end was this truck built or where it was done at also....

Yeah, that's what I'd suggest...I'd be interested in knowing that myself. I've never heard of F100s with factory disc brakes, but that doesn't necessarily mean it didn't happen. I'd be more inclined to believe that a previous owner did that though.

If it IS a very late '72, post the entire contents of the VIN tag...I'd love to see what it says.

I know that front power disc brakes were an option for our trucks in 68. So they were probably custom ordered when the truck was bought.

They were an option on '68-up F250s...they weren't available on F100s until '73.

I have heard of plenty of engine parts from 73 being put on a final run 72. of course not many parts for the engine where entirely different from 72 back in 73.

Shoot! That's right, I posted this just after watching the first video that you just posted. I completely forgot about that, I remember reading that in the Did You Know? banner. :hw: :oops!:

We got the cab pulled frame all cleaned up and have noticed one thing stange, the bracket that holds the front brake line to the frame is not of a Ford Truck or any I have seen on any of the trucks we have here and the thing about this is that the bracket holding this line is Riveted to the frame , so that leaves me to thing this is factory when you see that bracket riveted to frame,, will try to get a better picture, Now the brackets I have seen was a long one with 2 attaching pieces, This one is very short with only 1 rivet so strange ?????
