well..... I was going to post up here a couple weeks ago about the big road trip plan.... but... I don't do plans very well and then there's that jinx thing... anyway....

Borrowed a shell and bolted it down, cleaned out the rig and changed the oil, two full tanks and away we go.

Hauled two games from home here in Middle o' Oregon to a pinball show in Middle o' Cali. Then brought another home. Around 1300 miles with running around at the other end. Burned a lake of gas and a thimble or two of oil. Mission accomplished - sold both toys to folks who were very happy to get them, and bought one I've wanted for a while....

I trusted my blue 67 standard cab, rebuilt 390, 3 speed on the column, manual steering and drum brakes to go from Florida to North California, drive it to work there for 2 months and then back to Florida. I really enjoyed that run with it. I trusted all of my bumps even when I probably shouldn't have. When they are right, they are great.

Good to see you on here Trevor. CACWBY is still one of my favorite bumps.

My new 69 Highboy I trust it a fair amount or atleast more than I did the 70 I had for almost 4yrs.I've driven the 69 to school a few times before I graduated but the extreme camber problem make speeds above 40 a little scary and the shifter being bent so much that 3rds almost impossible to get in traffic is kind of a downfall but the 4x4 and being able to go anywhere is nice

I'm still driving mine on a regular basis and I trust it not to break down but the one thing I'm not real fond of is traffic.
I get to go out into the country but I also have to go into and through Pittsburgh. The manual brakes just don't thrill me for the quick traffic stops. There's nothing you can do about leaving room in front of you for response time. Leave a space between you and the next car, if it's big enough, some one will jump right in. So there's always somone diving in front of your bumper. I can go to my office the back way, it adds about 15 miles to the trip but can actually be faster. Cruising the parkway at 60 mph is no problem as far as the handling goes, she steers great, it's the 0-15mph that stinks.

Thinking back to when everyones brakes sucked, not as many people tailgated. You naturally left the room you needed but the idiot was an exeption. Now with anti-lock, discs, power and great handling on the new vehicles (my 09 Silverado makes my 69 Chevelle look like a wet turd in the corners and stopping) the safe driver is almost the exeption.
Sometimes the mind, for reasons we don't necessarily understand, just decides to go to the store for a quart of milk.

I would start out to California in mine with nothing more than some basic hand tools & a extra set of points. Its a trouble free old truck.

I have been neglecting doing some basic maint. on it here lately. The front end needs gone thru, it needs a new carrier bearing & could stand a new rear main seal. Other than that its golden. All of the above mentioned are still factory 1971 parts.

Fewer people have manual transmissions today too. They get right up behind you on a hill because they aren't anticipating that you might roll backwards before you let out the clutch.

How about a big FORD tailgate in your face, Mr. Subaru-driver?

:) This is why you absolutely can NOT roll backwards when you start out. The Ford tailgate doesn't worry me nearly as much as planting a set of trailer tandems on some idjits hood.

after five months of daily driving mine and a few longer trips (360 miles round trip), i think i could take it anywhere. i really like driving this truck. it's straight enough that it's not a rusty wreck, but it's not straight enough to worry about it in the day to day.

My bump isn't running (yet) but when I finally get it fired up I'm sure I'll be able to drive it anywhere (new motor, trans, u-joints, axle bearings, brakes, radiator, belts, hoses, etc.). I could jump in my 63 Uni and drive it anywhere.

Although I no longer have a 'bumpside', I do however have a '77 'Dentside' and drive it EVERYWHERE. It has plenty 'o power(thank you 460),a/c,cruise,3G alt, headlight relays, dual tanks,D61 with 3.07 gears. I get about 11-12mpg with it :D . But as soon as I get rid of my Jeep Comanche I will be on the look out for another 'BUMP'.

Much of trusting our trucks is adequate preparation in terms of carrying supplies, parts, etc, as has been mentioned. Kind of reminded me of this old thread...

good reading...

I'm glad to hear that these trucks are solid. I'm about to separate from the military and have to drive about 3000 miles home. I had my truck shipped from home to help with the move. Aside with a regular maintainence things all I really have to do is replace the radiator and the master cylinder, and these just recently went bad. Anything that goes wrong on the trip I should be able to fix on my own. I'm a little worried about the motor and trans though, the motor has exhaust leaks on both sides and the trans used to slip(added fluid and it hasn't happend since). If anyone has any pointers I should look out for, they would be appreciated. I guess I've got to trust mine with this trip coming up.
